Val was about to give up looking for Elijah, he had searched almost the entire city, maybe he was wrong about Elijah's rebirth patterns. He began walking towards his apartment, deciding that he would find Elijah later. Or maybe Elijah's rebirths are over, maybe he found his purpose in life, maybe Val will never see his literal life long friend again.

Val sighed when he walked into his lonely apartment, filled with boxes, having only moved to Seattle a few days ago. He could make some other friends and begin taking notes on their rebirth patterns, but it had taken so much time to calculate when Elijah would be reborn, and where. Other people are usually reborn everywhere, but not Elijah. He was in the U.S. mostly, as I've mentioned before, and it would be cool in Val's opinion to see the rest of the world, but it would also cost a lot of money. His art hasn't been selling well lately, people mostly wanting to buy other things, and Val had entirely no other talents. He's always wanted to play the bass, but despite having living for over 500 years, he's never gotten around to it. No band or music for him.

(note: the first chapter originally said 1800's but I'm changing it to 1500's because that fits better)

He sat on his bed, getting his laptop off of his nightstand, and going on social medias. He's kept pictures of himself off of them, mostly having fan accounts of whatever, or only accounts for his paintings and drawings. He didn't want anybody realizing that he was the guy who randomly moved away from wherever and stopped all contact with that person 50 years ago, and somehow looks exactly the same.

Many people have been asking him for a "selfie" whatever that means, which judging by context clues means "a photo of yourself". It was an odd term, but he's gotten used to everybody's vocabulary suddenly changing while he's holed himself up somewhere, waiting for Elijah to age a bit, so he wouldn't look like a creep while walking around with him. Just imagine that, you see a 20 something year old man walking with a young boy, and they obviously aren't related, they look nothing alike, and seem to be friends. Pretty creepy.

Val decided to just go to bed, closing his laptop's lid and setting it beside him. He rolled over, closed his eyes, and after awhile, fell asleep. Falling asleep much easier after walking around the city all day.

The morning after was pretty normal. Val waking up at 9, making breakfast, which actually meant eating a granola bar, hating eating breakfast, and watched the news, which he recorded from earlier.

Of course there was nothing very interesting happening, so the news was pretty bland, but they filled it up with stories of dogs in shelters that need homes, which caused Val to smile. He's always been an animal lover, but he's never had pets, knowing that he would outlive them no matter what he did, just like everything else in his life.

You see, Val basically only has one friend who he can trust with his secret, which of course is being immortal. That friend is Elijah, if he makes other friends somehow, he needs to cut them out of his life within a year or two, or else they'll notice they're growing older, and he is not. So Val is a pretty sad and lonely person most of the time. He likes being alone, but not lonely. If that makes any sense. He guesses it's just him being tired of not having anybody to be with forever, friendship-wise, he's not interested in relationships or anything of the sort. Everybody leaves him. It's not their fault though, it's his for being that one person who is stuck living forever, being cursed.

The worst part is when he walks outside, out to get food, which he doesn't really need since he can't starve to death, he's tried. He's tried many ways of dying, just trying to get out of this somehow, but nothing ever works. He gets food anyways, wanting to look normal, plus eating makes him a healthy weight, if he doesn't eat he becomes deathly skinny which scares many people. Anyways, he hears children talking about how they wish they were immortal, which causes him to basically run back home, not wanting to be around people anymore if they are to say that.

Immortality may seem like a good thing, but it is really a curse. Trust Val, he should know.
