I sit on the plane, next to my care worker.

''jamila, I know its been hard ever since your mother died...'', she carried on but as soon as she said 'mother' it brought back a memory.

~flashback~

it was a dark night and I was walking home from school late.

I entered me and ma's small hut, only to see a large, dark man towering over my kneeling mother with a riffle.

''Give us the money, Chipo(my mother's name)",he said in a gruff voice.

his head turned to me when I entered.

''please sir, we don't have any money'', I said pleadingly in tears.

''give me the money, or I will shoot your mother'', he said drawing the gun closer to my mother's head.

''don't shoot me sir, I'm the only thing my daughter has left please.'', my mother said crying.

''you have until the count of five.''

''1"

''nooo, ma , please don't'', I screamed

''2 ,3",

''Mr I beg you we have no money please'' she said streaming tears.

''4 5", he said pulling the trigger.

Then he left.

I looked up to see my mother's lifeless body lying on the floor.

''ma ma, dont leave me ma pleases'', I screamed crawling her head.''please''....

she was dead. I was 15. its been a year.

~end of flashback~

''jamila, jamila'', she tapped me lightly

''yes'', sorry'', I murmured

''now you have been very lucky, you're new adopted family are quite wealthy and loving. They already have two of-

''I know, i know you've told me the details over and over.'', I said exasperated.

''I know, you just can't afford to blow this opportunity, jamila you now have a chance to carry on with your education and make something of yourself'', she said inspiringly.

I nodded slowly.

after a while I needed the toilet.

I flushed then I looked at myself in the mirror.

My eyes were different-to most Africans-.

I had hazel eyes-with golden tints-, which stood out against my brown skin.I had a small nose and a pouted mouth. my back hair was long, but frizzy so I nearly always had it in a ponytail or a bun.

I had never worn make-up in my life. ma couldn't afford it.

ma couldn't afford the very high street clothes either, so I right now I wore a khaki vest top, dark green shorts and white pumps.

I went back to my seat and enjoyed the rest of the flight.
