CHAPTER ONE
The demon got away from me, again, but I kept the victim alive.
Above me through the lights of downtown San Diego, the full moon hung bright and clear, enjoying her second day of brilliance. Also reminding me that her third night was soon to come and with it the demon would return. I had to be better prepared.
What attacked the victim was described by police as a large animal. I knew better. Not because I'm a doctor, and have seen the results of serious animal attacks, but because I'm a witch, and I know a demon attack when I feel one.
I was downtown in the hopes of finding the source of these maulings before its manifestation. Last month there were four victims — one for each day of the full moon. The attacks were vicious, and all of the victims died. Last night's victim died as well. Tonight's victim, a young man walking with his date to the Gaslamp District, from his condo, survived because I arrived in time to save him. He was torn and bleeding out. Only witchcraft and fast medical treatment kept him from transitioning into that good-night.
I was heading back to my car when I glanced inside a bar with its Friday night crowd of lovers and hopefuls and decided a drink would be a good thing. A drink and the warmth of life around me. Walking in from the street I scanned the press of happy people. Each blissfully unaware that three blocks away a demon was set loose to murder.
A place at the bar opened so I wove through the crowd and claimed the empty stool.
The bartender was a delicious young woman with blond hair striped twice with magenta. Her sapphire eyes focused on me as she flashed a perfect smile. Her perky breast moved just enough under her white collared shirt to tell anyone willing to notice, that she wasn't wearing a bra. I smiled, as her nipples traced the thin fabric.
"What can I get you," she yelled above the din around us.
"Rum, on ice. Large," I said.
"Double?"
"Triple."
She nodded and fixed my drink. I laid a twenty on the bar and when she put my drink down she snatched it up and made change.
I turned my back and leaned against the bar with my elbows, wandering the crowd with my eyes and imagination. Little Miss Nipples was pleasant enough, but picking up a bartender on a Friday night was next to impossible — especially in a straight bar with an overflowing crowd of drinkers. She probably didn't wear a bra because she didn't have time to flirt for her tips. Couldn't blame a girl. Some of her quicker turns were perfect and blameless.
I tucked a lock of my long red hair behind my ear and looked for someone interesting — just as someone interesting parted the crowd coming toward me.
