The reaping for the quell

The day was cold. But not in temperature, but of the hearts of the district five citizens. The temperature was quite nice, so if the reaping was not today, the children would be playing in the square. My brother, Felix, would join all the other 10 year olds playing with skipping rocks. My sister, Eden, would be with her friends gawking at the dresses in the shop windows. But, we are standing here in the square, almost silent. The faint breathing cutting through the silence almost like a knife.

Ever since the quell was announced people pitied my whole family, almost as much as when I entered the games. The 67th hunger games were in a barren waste land, and some how I survived. Selene or I will go back into the arena. Well, I will.

Selene is a fifty year old woman who won the 45th hunger games and that had left her paralyzed from the waist down. She lost her brother to the 47th. I could never imagine losing Eden or Felix to the games. Even though Felix claims he would 'slaughter the competition'. The games change a person, and I'm volunteering for Selene. To add to the problem her granddaughter is due to have a baby in a few Months.

Giselle walks onto the stage, less cheery than usual. Giselle's first year as a escort was the year i survived. Her hair has faded, Like her spirit. Her outfit is entirely bubble gum pink, from her top, to her shoes. "Welcome, ladies and gentleman to the 75th annual Hunger Games. Like always, a video brought straight from the capital." I don't pay attention to the video, I've seen it since I was 6. "Like always, ladies first." The only sound heard is her high heels as she walks across the stage. Her hand so carefully picks up one of the two names in the bowl. She takes her original place on the stage, "Selene Blaire," she breathes out. Her emotions seamed mixed, happy it's not me, but sad that's it's Selene. Selene makes her way to the center of the stage.

"I volunteer," I say my voice not failing in the two words. The entirety of district five stares at me, like they were letting me take back my words, I don't. "I volunteer as tribute," my voice stronger than before. I walk to the middle of the stage, looking at my family trying to keep their tears in. "The female tribute from district 5, Lux Sutton, everybody," her voice quivering around my name. No one claps, no one cheers, like they do when a tribute is chosen in district one or two, they are silent and I have an uncountable amount of eyes watching me. One boy who looked to be 16, he would have been 8 when I won my games, did the salute I did when my ally was killed. Mave was a 12 year old girl from district 12, she was too young almost like rue, but she could harm or seriously injure. Never kill, she was too innocent.

"Gavin Sanchez." The name rips through the silence that I left. Gavin is 25 and won the 64th games. He was my mentor. He is not much older than me but is like double my size in muscle. "Lux Sutton and Gavin Sanchez. The tributes for district 5 in the 75th hunger games. Shake hands." Gavin's handshake is firm. Peacekeepers come to take us away, "I have to say goodbye!" I yell. Fighting his grip I shake loose, I run to my little brother, sister, dad, and mom. I somehow get to hug every single one of my family members before being escorted with Gavin.

Haymitch's pov

I sit with Katniss and Peeta going over the tributes, we just finished four going on to five. "Lux Sutton huh, what a name." Peeta says. "yes because Peeta and Katniss are so much better," I reply with a smirk. "She looks weak," Katniss determines. "She's really not, she won at fourteen, and a really good person so if she goes let's hope it's fast." I really care about the girl. "Why do care about her so much Haymitch?" Peeta asks. "She's an old friend." I mostly lie. We watch Garret get reaped, and no one volunteer for him. "Questions on 5?" I ask, "who will Lux ally with?" Peeta asks. "Most likely she'll stay away from the careers, probably with  Johanna, maybe Beetee and Wiress, she's crazy smart she's be accepted in to any alliance she'd choose." Katniss goes next, " any skills that Lux has that we should know about?" I smirk at the though of Lux's eleven she got with one dagger. "Lux is good with knives, especially ringed knives, she got an eleven with one throw of a dagger, she's good with a sword but not as good with spears or tridents, bows are iffy depending at the distance. She's also incredibly swift." I give them a look as to say anymore questions? Peeta raises his hand slowly, " how do we get to be her ally?" "Well, lucky for you we are good friends, I'll talk to her at the tribute parade. Be prepared to be allied with Johanna, and or Beetee and Wiress." I walk out of the room preparing how to confront Lux about Alliances with my tributes, hopefully she will say yes to me.

Lux's pov

"Who do you want to ally with" Gavin asks like the mentor he is. I was currently sitting on the train that would send me to be pampered then to hell. Gavin was the mentor for me in my games, I was his first tribute to come home. " Johanna." My friend. A person I can trust not to kill me in my sleep. "Who will you ally with?" Gavin was my mentor and by the way the other victors look at him they don't like him

*Flashback*

Gavin leads me to the training center room with all the victors, I'm the new kid on the block. I survived the last Hunger games so far. As Gavin opens the doors glares are immediately shot at both him and me. After the speech President Snow gave about me and my brilliance, Gavin took me to all the tables to meet the victors. Some of them were nice like Haymitch, Beetee, Wiress, and Mags. I didn't get to meet the other victor from four. "Why don't they like you?" The question made him miss a step in his very formal militant way of walking. "They think it's unfair I got a victor after my second year of being a mentor. Haymitch has been at it for 14 years and not one victor, but he took a liking to you which is good I guess. They'll just dislike you for awhile, they have to get over the fact that you killed some of their tributes."

They hated him because on his second try at being a mentor he got me and my district partner, Langston. He was strong but stupid, he ate the most poisonous berry out there, Nightlock. He was dead within 24 hours of the start of the games, the barren waste land had two bushes of Nightlock, the only plants that had produced fruit in the arena. It killed 5 tributes including Langston. The game makers had not intend for it to kill that many tributes, so the bushes disappeared instantly. They also hated him because got a victor, no a survivor of the games.

They hated me because I killed some of their tributes. I killed district one's female tribute, Juniper. I killed her when she attacked me at the feast. I stuck a knife straight through Phoenix's stomach after he killed Mave. I also watched Luna from District three die, Langston killed her with no remorse, I can still hear the sickening sound of metal slicing through skin. The amount of screams I heard in that arena was enough to last a lifetime. They also I hate me because I won, it's as simple as that. I survived and their tributes died.

Haymitch didn't hate me straight away. I allied with his tribute Mave. Mave was extremely intelligent. Her brother, Axel was killed in the 66th Hunger Games. Her family lost children to the games back to back. I remember her telling me that she wasn't expected to win. Her brother was. We exchanged stories about our districts. 12 isn't that much different to 5. I promised to myself that Mave would go home. My parents had Eden and Felix. Her parents would have nobody except each other if Mave had died. I left no mercy for Phoenix when he killed a little girl 6 years younger than him. Mave was 12 Axel was 13. Neither one of their kids lived past 14, all because of one sick man. When Mave died I took flowers and braided them into her hair, I made a bouquet to hide her wound. I put her body in a meadow of grass because she said her and her brother loved to play in the meadow behind her house.

Giselle calls us to the table, she, Selene, Gavin, Darren and Gerard start to eat. I don't. I can't eat thinking about my family crying because we all know no district five tribute will return safely. I excuse myself from the table. I head to my room, it's very bland. But, why make an extravagant room for someone who's going to die. I just lay down and hope to find sleep.

"Lux.....Lux.......Lux" I wake to some one prodding me trying to wake me up but, I just roll over and fall back asleep. "Cmon Lux. Wake up your stylist need to make you pretty again." I recognize the voice as Giselle. I wake up and get dressed. Giselle walks me to the table, they have extravagant breakfasts I just have toast and bacon. I ride the elevator down to the prep and stylist level. I know I'm late when I walk in, and my lateness earns some glares from the prep teams. Octavia, Ciruss, and Vulvia are waiting to get me ready for the tribute parade. But when I get a better look at my prep team I can see they're crying.

Crap.......
