I can still remember the day August Hale came into my life, it was a cold sunday evening, October 4th was the date. My mom had been going on for weeks about some college friends of hers which had been killed in a car crashing leaving a ten year old girl alone in this world.
Mom had left three days before to attend her college friends funerals and at the time it was just an idea to bring the girl back and let her join our family, dad had been all up for it, sure he had said it would strengh the budjet a little more than he had hoped but he was willing to give the girl a family, a home.
I remember being in the kitchen with Cassidy my then sixteen year old sister, we were talking about my up and coming football game, she had told me that her friends were all going to be coming to support me since they found me 'cute'. It was something my thirteen year old self wasn't to happy about being called. Dad was making the last touches to the spare room which now held August's name on the door when the front door opened letting in the cold evening air into the warm house.
"We're back", i heard my mom announce as the front door closed, Cassidy and myself found our way to the hall and stood just outside the kitchen, dad was making his way downstairs, pale purple paint all over his jeans and checked shirt, i had to say the colour suited him.
"Welcome home honey, August" my dad beamed, he was trying to come over as friendly and being six foot four and two hundred pounds of musucle is was kind of hard to do that but i think he pulled it off as a small girl stepped from behind mom and looked up at dad.
"She is a cute thing" Cassidy whispered to me, i had to admit i agreed with my sister, August stood looking at us all holding my mom's hand tightly, her long brown hair pulled back into a pony-tail, her big blue eyes shined with moister a sign she had been crying or was about to cry.
"August sweetheart this big giant is my husband Mark and over by the kitchen is our children Cassidy who is sixteen and Blake who is thirteen", with each name mom called out her eyes found that person and she gave us each a small smile before whispering out a small "Hello". Dad clapped his hands causing her small frame to jump slightly, "Right shall we show you, your room August?", a small nod of her head and mom passed her hand to dads before watching them disappear upstairs.
Cassidy and i made our way back into the kitchen and mom soon followed. "Poor thing, she did nothing but cry the whole car jounrey here, i hope she can settle in well", mom said pulling open the fridge and taking out items for what i assumed would soon become dinner. "Did she have no other family?", Cassidy asked, mom shook her head sighing before turning to us. "No and i would really appericate if you both welcome her into the family, treat her like you treat eachother, well not excatly like how you treat eachother, just" a heavy sigh left her mouth before she finished, "Make her feel welcome, make her feel part of this family", we both nodded our head just as dad walked into the kitchen August free. "She is getting use to the room, poor girl" dad sighed before placing a kiss on mom forehead.
Since that day August has been part of the family, i always knew i cared for her deeply, but i never realised just how much until last night, i glanced down at the now seventeen year old who was fast asleep in my arms, her bare shoulder on view i still couldn't believe we had ended up in bed together, me taking her innocents.
I glanced at the clock on the bed side table it was six am and i was leaving in three hours, leaving to go on a six month tour in Iran, i had not long finished my two years training and had returned home to a welcome party and people i had truly missed. But the happiness was shorted lived when i recieved a call saying my deployment was less than twenty four hours away.
I know it sound selfish but the moment i found out i was leaving so soon and the fact i would soon be fighting in a death sitution i allowed myself to play on the feelings i had for August since there may never been a chance for me to do so and i was shocked to find she too liked me more than an adoptive brother.
A knock on my bedroom door snapped me out of my thoughts and i panicked, i looked wide eyed at the door and felt myself calm down when i saw the lock was in fact locked. August stirred beside me when another knock sounded out, her big blue eyes looked at the door frowning before her gaze looked around the room before landing on me, at that moment her pale white cheeks turned a beautiful pink and her eyes lowered. "Blake are you awake yet son?", i heard my dad called from the other side of the door, i cleared my thoart still looking at August and called out back to him, "Yeah, give me a few minutes and i'll be down", i didn't hear his reply but the sound of his footsteps told me he was heading down stairs.
"Morning" August whispered, i couldn't help but chuckle, "Morning beauiful", i cripped her chin with my right hand forcing her to look at me before i leaned forward and kissed her, she sighed into the kiss and kissed me back, so i still wasn't the only one who wanted this.
"I need to go to my room before Mark and Helena finds me missing", i nodded but i pulled her closer to me kissing her again before kissing her jaw, her ear and down her neck to her collarbone. "I'll be back in six months, promise me no boys will touch whats mine", i knew it was a prick move to ask her this, but she was mine, no-one had touched her, kissed her or even loved her the way i do. "I promise", she said with a smile on her kissable lips, "Promise me if something happens to me you'll move on" her blue eyes started to water but she shook her head, "No, you'll come back to me, i-i love you Blake", my heart leapt at those words, she loved me as in L-O-V-E, i couldn't believe it and i knew the moment those words slipped pasted my lips they were the truest words i have ever spoken. "I love you too August".
Nine am and i was stood outside the coach which would take us to the airport, mom and dad were holding each other tears in my mom eyes but they were not falling yet, key word yet. Cassidy had finally arrived along with her husband Leo and their six month old son Theo, August stood off to the side hugging herself partly from the coldness in the air and partly because she was upset i was leaving to fight for our country.
"Family hug", Mom called out making me move my gaze from August, we all managed to sqease into a six person and one baby hug, and that was the moment mom chose to start her sobbing. "Oh my baby boy is going to war" she sobbed causing Cassidy to laugh, "Mom he'll come back, he better come back his nephew wants his uncle at his first birthday", i couldn't help but laugh, "Sure thing Cass, i'll be back to celebrate little man turning one".
"Ten minutes troops and then we leave" our general shouted from beside the coach, with that i decided it was time for my final hugs and to make my way across, i kissed and hugged both my parents first, mom hugged me to the point where i couldn't breath before pressing her lips to my forehead and saying "i love you", i returned the gestor, dad bear hugged me - lifting me of the ground something which was hard to do since i was now six foot four and one hundred and eight pounds - saying "You better come back to your mom boy or i'll kill you myself", i laughed at the fact it didn't make no sense but i nodded and turned to Cassidy who was now holding back her own tears, i pressed my lips to baby Theo forehead before kissing my sister on the cheek and giving her a side hug, Leo her husband shook my hand and wished me luck, i inturn told him to look after Cassidy and Theo he nodded before joining his wife. August was last because i wanted to spend the most time with her.
I held my hands out to her and she rushed to me wrapping her arms around my waist and i around her shoulders holding her tight. "I'm going to miss you", she whispered into my chest, "I'm going to miss you too", i said pressing my lips to her neck, i knew my parents or anyone looking would just think we was hugging tightly. "I love you August, remember what you promised", i felt her head nod before i heard her speak. "I know, i love you too Blake, please come home safe", she kissed my cheek once she pulled away before turning and heading over to mom, dad, Cassidy, Leo and baby Theo.
Once i was on the bus i sat and looked out the window watching my family and the girl i love wait for me to leave, i knew without a doubt i would come back to them and i would make August more than just an adoptive daughter to my parents, i would make her their daughter in law.
