I never expected what would come to me the next day when I went to city hall, I ended up with the shock of a lifetime. I never expected that I would be a sidekick to a super hero.
On the morning of February sixteenth I walked up the city hall steps and into the large center of the building. Looking around I tried to find this "Phil" person. Unsurprisingly I couldn't find him. I probably should have looked him up, so I would at least have an idea of who I'm looking for. The thought that never crossed my mind was if I'm his sidekick, who was his soulmate. Your soulmate is supposed to be your sidekick and you are theirs. In the middle of the war within my brain, I felt a small tap on my left shoulder.
"Hi, um are you Dan?" the guy that tapped on my shoulder asked.
"Uh, yes. I'm Dan, and you are?"
"My name is Phil, I believe you are supposed to be my new sidekick." The man, I now know as Phil, said.
My eyes widened, "You need me to be your sidekick?"
"Yes. My mother and father believe I can't take care of myself and are forcing me to get a sidekick, even though I've been on my own for years. I deal with a lot, so if you think this isn't the job for you please turn away now. I need someone who will stay by my side, fight with me no matter the causes, make sure to always be the best you can be, and most importantly work when it's work time and have fun when it's fun time!" Phil ranted but finished with a smile.
I thought for a second, then shook my head.
"Phil, of course I can do all that stuff. It's honestly pretty cool you've been on your own for this long and still manage to be this confident and stuff." I trailed off awkwardly.
He looked at me with doubt in his eyes.
"I'm serious Phil, if you're willing to have me as your sidekick, then I'd be honored." I ended smiling sillily.
He giggled, " Alright Dan, I think I can give you a try."
I smiled, "First off, I have a question."
He nodded then motioned for me to follow him. We walked to a small room in the back of city hall.
"This is my office." He smiled motioning around him.
I nodded looking around. "Okay, now on to my question. If you don't mind me asking, how and why are you a superhero, if you don't have a soulmate?"
He sighed glancing to the floor, and for the first time since we met, wouldn't meet my eye.
"Well, it's kind of complicated, but I guess since we'll be working together for a while I better go ahead and tell you. Have you ever heard of a neutral?" Phil said looking at his feet, his chest rising and falling rapidly. "Um no, I don't think so."
"Figures. Okay well, a neutral is a person that is born with superpowers, but doesn't have a set soulmate. Before you ask, yes a neutral does have a soulmate they just won't show the signs as fast as any regular would. So, say you and I were soulmates, we wouldn't know for a couple of weeks to a few months, because I'm a neutral. Also, please don't feel bad for me, I'm happy with who I am, I just have a hard time explaining to people that I'm not the same as everyone else." Phil finished off, his breath subsiding a bit.
I took in all that she had said before saying anything. "Wow Philly, I never even thought there were people other than regulars and the independents." I said forgetting to care that the small nickname had slipped.
"Yeah, a lot of people don't."
To this day, that conversation runs through my head a lot. I become frustrated, because there are so many different types of people, and the average person world know none of them other than what's most common. There are good people who want to be who they are, but don't know how to explain the way they feel.
After three months or so of being Phil's sidekick, we had become a lot closer. He trusted me with everything, and I trusted him just as much. Soon though, I started to feel a certain way about him. I was fascinated with the way he wouldn't even try and still look amazing. Anytime I saw him my face lit up, and I smiled a lot. When I wasn't with him he was on my mind and I was starting to wonder if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
