I never realized how boring world history could be until Mr. Redford lectured us on how tea greatly affected basically everything around us. He tried really hard to make connections to todays society but unfortunately failed most times. I was absentmindedly taking notes when he walked in. Everyone in the class turned and looked at the new kid awkwardly stand in the doorway looking at the teacher. Mr. Redford beamed at him and took his pass and told him to take a seat diagonal from mine. He immediately sat and faced down toward his desk. I always felt bad for new kids who came in the middle of the year because of the whole new faces and no friends thing, but also because he would have to redo part of his life and there was nothing he could do about it because we're only in high school. He had light brown hair that wasn't long but wasn't too short and had a little swoop in the front. He was dressed like everyone else, jeans and a t-shirt, perfect clothing for spring in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
"This is the class that will teach you a lot about the past but will also give you an idea about the future," Mr. Redford announced pulling my attention away from the new kid looking up at my history teacher giving the same line he gave us on the first day of school, "enjoy our thrilling class Andrew Dearing!"
After the lengthy history class I walked to study hall and told my teacher I had a student council meeting and if I could go. My teacher waved her hand as if she was getting rid of a passing thought and continued reading her ever so fascinating book. I walked out and went to the library where the student council meeting took place every Tuesday during study hall. I walked in and took a seat in the back and took out my notebook and a pen ready to take notes, considering that's my only job in this meeting. I only took student council to put something on my college applications but I ended up really enjoying it. The majority of the kids who took this club were pretty nice and did most of the work, so it didn't cause any stress for me at least. The meeting began with our president, Sheryl Harvey, giving us a welcome speech and an agenda with today's meeting.
"Hello everyone!" she said enthusiastically but still remaining quiet considering we were in the library, "Today we are going to talk about the upcoming pep rally and how to raise money for the school dance in May. We really need some volunteers to help set up and clean up both events so sign up at the end of the meeting! Speaking of volunteers we have a new student here at Greenwood High and I need someone to show him around, preferably someone that is one of his classes! His name is Andrew Dearing, does anyone have classes with him?"
I looked around to see if anyones hand went up but saw none. I slowly raised mine hoping for someone else to say they had a class with him but no one did.
"Great! Sam you will be showing Andrew around the school point him out to the rest of his classes and give him some Greenwood tips!" she ended her statement with a smile as she always does. Sheryl is your typical high school president but with extra enthusiasm. Don't get me wrong she's the nicest person you'll ever meet but sometimes I wish she would let some happy air out of her head. I half-smiled back at her and gave her a thumbs up as a way to say 'great, can't wait' and not risk sounding sarcastic. The rest of the meeting went by pretty fast and at the end I ripped out the notes and gave them to Sheryl to look over and keep for future reference I guess.
"Andrew has to go to the counselor during lunch so you'll meet him there." Sheryl informed me as she handed me his class schedule and some welcome notes from some of the teachers and Sheryl. I smiled and slightly nodded to let her know I understood then waved goodbye. It was actually lunch now so I made my way to the counselor's office and knocked on the door waiting for Mrs. Reyes to answer. She came to door and gave me a huge hug as a welcome. She did this with everybody, she thought it gave us students a sense of being wanted or something. Mrs. Reyes was my favorite adult besides my parents so I welcomed the hug with open arms literally. When she let go I smoothed out my shirt and tucked my hair behind my ear so I looked somewhat presentable for Andrew.
"Hey Mrs. Reyes!" I said as I followed her into her office with Andrew sitting in one of her chairs, "I'm here to welcome Andrew to Greenwood" I glanced toward him and saw that he was staring at me causing me to blush and become suddenly self-concious of how I looked.
"That's great!" she exclaimed as she motioned Andrew toward us. He stood up and walked over leaving a comfortable distance between the two of us. "Andrew was just saying how he didn't know how to get out to the trailers so maybe you could show him that first!" she wrote us both passes so we could freely walk around the school.
"Thanks." I took the passes and handed one to Andrew and started walking out to the hall to start our in school tour. I turned to make sure that Andrew was following, which he was.
Once we got away from Mrs. Reyes Andrew turned to me, "It's Drew by the way."
I glanced at him thinking the name 'Drew' suited his features more than 'Andrew'. "It's Sam by the way," I replied, "not Samantha." I smiled at him hoping he would see me as someone to talk to in class. I saw one corner of his mouth turn up a little but I mostly saw his smile in his eyes.
"So, are you ready for our first adventure?" he asked still keeping the smile.
"Are you implying that there will be more?" I arched my eyebrow toward him smirking.
"This is definitely the first of many." he decided as his smile grew. I felt butterflies and realized his smile was my new favorite thing.
