"Welcome to Miami International Airport! The temperature is currently 88 degrees, make sure to collect your bags at terminal D, and thank you so much for flying with American Airlines and we hope you enjoy your experience here!"
Suprisingly, for an American Airlines flight, it was actually really empty. Well I'm in first class, so I had my own seat. I looked through the window as the pilot moved the plane into the gate. I checked in my carry on because I didn't have the time to be struggling with it in the airport. So I just grabbed my backpack and left the plane.
The pilot said Baggage Claim D right? Well I heard him say that but my main question is HOW do I get there, it's bad enough I know NOTHING about this city. I don't know who to ask, I don't even want to ask anybody because I'm that shy. Urgh-
I stood confused for about 5 minutes until I saw a woman who seems nice in uniform, so I ran up to her.
"Excuse me miss, do you know where Baggage Claim D is?"
"Of course, I work here don't I?" She gave me a grin, while I gave a nervous chuckle. "You head straight down that isle, and keep on going until you see Gate 52, when you see that gate, go right and follow the path until you see it." I gave her a understanding smile and followed her directions until I saw "BAGGAGE CLAIM D" big and broad in front of me. I saw that everybody started to grab their bags. Luckily for me, my carry on and stuff was there waiting for me as soon as I walked in. I grabbed them and walked outside. I also saw a bunch of girls looking at me from the corner of my eye, I'm used to that. I'm quite attractive, but I'm not attracted to girls at all. I should expect that much more in this god-forsaken city.
I sat on the bench as I waited for my aunt to pull up. I pulled out my phone and called her to tell her that I'm here, she said she was coming. But due to security issues, they had to make her park. After 10 minutes, her car pulled up. She ran up to me and gave me a huge hug.
"Dominic! My nephew, god I missed you! You've gotten so big and you're so handsome and it's been so long!" She said before burying my face in kisses.
"I missed you to Auntie, Ma and Dad told me to tell you hello by the way." I said smiling as she buried my face in kisses, she pulled away and cupped my cheeks in her hand before giving me a concerned look.
"How are they taking it, baby?"
I gave her a shrug. "Not really good. They'll get over it sooner or later though." I said and we remained eye contact before she smiled and started to laugh. "Enough of that boy, your cousin Alonzo is gonna be happy to see you and I'm making some chicken for dinner tonight!" she said while we enter the car and drive home.
The drive home was long, Miami is an amazing place honestly. But the atmosphere and the way people act towards eachother isn't how people would do it back home. To much starbucks, to much chipotles, everything is here. Usually people is happy when they see big cities like Miami. But frankly, I'm not happy. I'm already home sick and I just landed what the fuck is wrong with me, I'll get used to it. I know it.
"And we're home!" My aunt said and I raised my head up to see this nice house. This place is quiet actually, and calm. "Mi casa, su casa!" She said, smiling at me as I smile back at her. I opened her trunk to pull my suitcase out of the car, and I looked over at the street at this kid. He seems to be around my age actually. He seems to be a little moody, sad actually. He's talking on the phone. I can hear him from here.
"I don't know Ashley, I don't think I'll be dating for a while. He broke my heart yanno? I need to be more picky in relationships. I'm still a little destroyed and need time to heal."
He was choking on his words like he was about to cry. Poor kid. I think he caught me staring at him- He's actually kind of attractive.
"Come on kid, stop daydreamin' and pull your stuff in!" He said before pulling me inside the house forcefully with my bags.
As I enter the house, it's amazing quite frankly. "Alonzo! Guess who's home?" My aunt scream and my cousin Alonzo walked down the stairs and started to scream his head off when he saw me. Alonzo is a year younger than me. He's always looked at me like an older brother. "I missed you so damn much!" He said before dapping me and hugging me. I just raised my eyebrow after him. "I haven't seen you in 3 years." I said laughing loudly. "Nigga- still. It's been 3 long years and puberty hit your ass like a brick." He said, patting my head.
"Well, while you guys are reconciling, show him to his bedroom while I make this chicken." I heard my aunt yell from across the room before he pulled me upstairs. "You're staying in the guest room." He said and opened to door. This room is nice, the bed looks comfortable and ugh- I have to sign up for school tomorrow and I'm suffering from major jet lag. I sat down on the bed and watched my cousin as he was nervously laughing. "You afraid to talk to me now?" I laughed as he smiled. "Nah- It's just been so long and you look so damn grown." He said.
"So this neighborhood..." I said giving a "meh"-ish look and he answered my question.
"Well Dominic, this is Pinecrest. This neighborhood is pretty odd- It's the suburbs but you would swear we're just educated hoodlums. Just by hearing the name, you would guess it's predominantly white people. Well you're correct. But we have a couple black people. This place has a fair share of Italians as well. We have neighborhood watches and shit so- please for your safety don't walk around here late at night with a black sweater. Some of the people here are quite racist-" He said and I was kinda shocked to hear that.
"Noted." I said before chuckling. "Yo, I gotta go to the bathroom to shower and I'm tired as hell. Can you tell Auntie to hold the chicken for tomorrow when I'm not so tired?" I said and he nodded.
After a brief shower, my mind wandered with thoughts. How was mom and dad handling me being away, are they happier or are they sad? What about my siblings? I regret leaving, but at the same time I don't. And something that has been on the tip of my head for a while.
Who was that kid across the street, and why was he so hurt?
My eyelids got heavier and heavier as I fell asleep.
