"John?" Sherlock called for the umpteenth time, trying to pry a reaction from the blonde boy. Seeing that it barely made John's nose twitch, he proceeded to throw crumpled pieces of paper at him, boredom clearly showing on his features. When the third ball of paper barely reached the other boy, John lightly laughed at his friend's attempts.
"What now, sherlock?" He answered him, a small smile present in his voice.
"I'm bored"
"You're always bored"
"Now even more so and you, John, are not helping." At that, John couldn't help but look up from his textbook, mirth sparkling in his eye. Currently, both boys were in their respective houses, the same tree between them, both beside their own window sills. It was convenient, them living directly across one another. John formerly dragged his desk chair towards the slidable opening, where he planned to study in the quiet mid-morning air, that is, until his friend popped out from the other end. He expected it, really.
"Sherlock, if i don't pass the test I wouldn't be able to live here with you for another year!"
"Oh please, that test was easy"
"Easy for you to say" John lightly chewed the end of his faded yellow pencil as he murmured the sentence. His brow furrowed a bit as his eyes skimmed over a tricky math problem. Sherlock watched on, chin propped on his folded arms that leaned on the window, legs swinging from the stool he sat on.
"John?" Sherlock's tentative voice made the other boy look him over, face etched with a hint of concern.
"Are you sure?" The younger one of the two buried his nose into his arm as he voiced the question. The thought was bothering him, how after a month since their first encounter, John would suddenly want to change schools to stay with him. That's what he'd been studying for, the moment it dawned on them that by the end of the season they would part, they had come up with a not-so elaborate plan of asking John's mother on leaving boarding school. Though, it meant that John would be leaving his mates and start living with his family, who he barely saw all year. It didn't make sense to Sherlock, why'd the boy agree with to be with him when everyone else decided to leave.
"Sure with what?" John's eyebrows were crunched, as his mouth pouted around the question.
"That you would start living here again? I mean, for the year. And shift schools?" Sherlock spoke up. John bit his lip in thought though only for a split second before he answered.
"Well, yeah. But only if my mum would allow. I would really want to though" John looked back down at his equation, nose scrunching up.
"Why?" He tilted his head a bit, arms tightening around their folded position.
"Why? Because you're my friend, and after all i did promise that I would protect you and mum always tells me to keep my promises" Sherlock nodded at his answer, warmth unknowingly spreading through his body. He felt a little at ease.
Sherlock continued to watch the other boy answer the same equation he'd been at for over five minutes. Throughout, John's arm that had been resting on the book rose to support his head as his frustration grew. His lips pursed and his eyebrows furrowed once again and Sherlock looked on with amusement. His tiny giggle didn't go unnoticed by the older boy, who pretended to be mad.
"Would you like some help John?" Sherlock asked, in a sarcastic manner, lightly mocking his friend.
