It was like any other day for me. I woke up in my flat got ready for work and then walked to the academy. I loved working at the Academy and I loved seeing my students there progress through the year. As I walked through the entrance to the academy I turned right and walked into the main office and checked my post cubby. I pulled out my mail and put it into my messenger bag and greeted the receptionist Nancy.
"Hello Nancy how's Tom doing?" I asked walking up to her oak desk. The older woman looked up at me with a bright smile.
"Tom is doing much better than he was last week. He seems to be getting over what ever he had." I returned her smile and began walking out the door.
"That's wonderful to hear. I'll see you later Nancy."
"Bye Ellie." I continued down the hall walking along the textured path that was placed on the hall for the students. When I reached my classroom I unlocked the door and set my bag down on my desk and pulled out my post. Most of it was reminders but one caught my eye. It was an orange flyer simply stating that we would be having a special performance today for the students. I set the flyer aside and tossed the rest in the bin next to my desk. I began to prepare for the day my students wouldn't be here for another hour yet. I opened the top drawer of my desk and took out a stack of braille paper and began putting them on each students desk. As I was doing this my classroom door opened to reveal the academy's chairman, Mr. Pyke. I paused my work turning and adjusted the cardigan that was over my dress.
"Good morning Mr. Pyke. How can I help you." I asked facing him with a few papers still in my hand.
"Good morning Ellie. I have our special guest in the hall at the moment, he wishes to observe one of our classes before his performance today. I was hoping that you would be willing to allow him to observe your class for the day." The man said adjusting his tweed jacket. I gave him a small smile and nodded my consent. I turned finishing passing out the papers.
"Of course Mr. Pyke. Could you show him in." When I turned back around to greet the man who walked through the door I was met by a man with red hair and who was at least five inches taller than me.
"Hello I'm..." He began holding out his hand.
"Ed Sheeran," I finished for him grasping his hand and shaking it,"I'm sorry that was rude. I'm Evelyn, Evelyn Watson, but everyone calls me Ellie." I said blushing when he smiled at me. We released hands.
"So what do you do before your students get here?" He asked looking down at me slightly.
"I usually pass out something that we will be working on for the day. Like today," I began grabbing one of the braille sheets of a nearby desk showing it to him," we are going to work on the braille alphabet. Its will allow them to read independently and get around on there own when the are older." He nodded in understanding.
"Come with me I'll get you a chair and put it upfront." We walked to the storage room down the hall and I went to grab one of the chairs but he got to it first. After getting it back to the classroom and sitting down at the front facing each other we started talking again.
"What made you want to teach here?" I smiled slightly looking into his blue eyes.
"I have three siblings, an older brother and two younger sisters. My youngest sister Sarah has been blind since birth, she is fourteen now. She actually went here for the first few years of her schooling just learning the basic skill that she would need to get by in life and then began attending a regular school. I saw how this academy helped her and I wanted to help people like my sister. After my schooling I applied here and at another academy like it in Brentwood. When I was accepted here there was no choice." I answered him averting my eyes from his gaze.
"So your sister's time here inspired you?"
"Yes it did." After I said this there was the sound of the bell throughout the school signaling that classes were starting soon. I stood and walked to the door opening it and standing in front of it and to the side. I looked out of the corner of my eye and saw Ed watching me but as soon as my first student walked in all of my attention was on them. I made sure all of my students made it safely to my classroom and were sitting in there correct seats. I walked to the front of the classes walking around one of my student's guide dog.
"Today we will be working with braille. The sheet is at the twelve o'clock position on your desks." I watched as each of my students reached out and gently touched the sheets. There was five total each had one letter on it. The first sheet was 'a', the second 'b', and so on. "Alright my lovelies we have a guest with us today so be on your best behavior. Now the top sheet has the letter 'A' on it in braille. Run the tips of your finger over it and repeat 'A' out loud." And that was the beginning of my friendship with Ed Sheeran.
