Background
Phillipa is a Chinese-American of both Chinese and white heritage. In an interview, she spoke about her upbringing: 'my dad is first-generation, so his parents were from China, and my mom was born and raised in southern Illinois and involved in arts.' She continued by stating, 'I was very much always encouraged [to pursue and acting career] but the mentality of "get your education" was still there.
Education
For high school, Phillipa went to Libertyville High School (2005-2008). And only a few years ago in 2012, she graduated from The Juilliard School's acting program.
Career
After her graduation from Juilliard, she was cast as Natasha Rostova in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 based on War & Peace in the Off Broadway production.
Then in 2013 she was given a recurring role on Smash, as the character Lexi. She appeared in five episodes.
When Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail asked to be a part of the reading of Hamilton in early 2014. She was given the role of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. Phillipa stayed with the role, even as of now as it playing on Broadway.
For her outstanding performance as Eliza, she has been nominated for several awards. She was nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for the 70th Tony Awards.
Her last show at Hamilton was on July 9th, 2016. She took her bows beside Leslie and Lin, two of her cast memebrs, who also parted their ways from the show the same night.
