MARK'S POV

I never thought Medon would call her. It didn’t make sense. But then again, nothing the Dark Courts did ever made any sense.

“Keira, you’ve been called to the Dark Courts. They’re…they’re not good news.”

How would I explain this? She wouldn’t understand any of this. She wouldn’t even believe it. “Do you know how you dream? Why you have good dreams or bad dreams?” I said suddenly.

She shook her head slowly, not quite understanding where I was going with this.

“There are…there are creatures out there that give you dreams. They gain energy from giving people dreams. Wonders are the ones that give you good dreams and day dreams. Horrors are the ones that give you bad dreams and nightmares. They tap into your subconscious and they find what you fear most or want most. The Horrors belong to the Dark Courts, Keira, and you just met one of them.”

She frowned. “What the hell are you talking about?”

I sighed. She didn’t believe me. I would have to prove it.  “A few of us are changed, even fewer are called, but most of us, most of us are born into this world, like me.” I dropped my glamour, the spell that made me look like a human. She gasped and backed away as she saw who I really was, what I really was. I had shrunk to about half my height. It was what I loved most about looking human, I was so much taller instead of being the height of an average Horror. My skin had a sort of glow to it but at the same time was dry and almost scaly. My nails had grown into claws and my hair had become almost non - existent.

By now Keira was crouching in a corner. “It’s just a dream. A dream. That’s all it is. It’s just a dream.” When she saw me coming towards her she screamed. “Don’t come near me! Don’t touch me! Leave me alone!”

I was glad Janae and the kids were sleeping, though Keira’s scream might have just woken them up.

I hated seeing her like this but she had to calm down. I did a series of gestures before pointing my hands at her. A calming spell. Exactly what she needs. “Keira?” I said softly, “Keira, you’ll be fine, just fine.”

She glared at me. “And when were you planning to tell me all this?” she asked. “When were you planning to tell me that you…that you looked like this?!” she spat, gesturing at my body. “That you’re not human?!”

I put on my glamour again quickly and noticed the distrust in her eyes. “Well, I hoped I wouldn’t have to. The Dark Courts are bad news…”

“And where do you stand in all this? What are you?”

I flinched slightly at the venom in her words. “I’m a rebel. I’m not part of either Court. I was just told to keep an eye on you by someone.”

“Someone?” she asked suspiciously.

“Someone.” I couldn’t tell her who it was for both our safety. “I can’t tell you who, I’m sorry. Damn it, I don’t what to do now. You can’t go to the Dark Courts but if you don’t they’ll come after you…” I trailed off, thinking aloud.

The Dark Courts were pure evil at their core. If they got a hold of Keira, they would change her without a doubt. It was only a matter of time. If I asked for the Light Courts protection, they might just end being involved in something they couldn’t win. This world wasn’t like a fairytale, the good guys wouldn’t always win.

“Why can’t I go? To the Dark Courts or whatever you call it. It sounds like I have no choice anyway,” she muttered.

I stared at her like she had grown another head. “You can’t go there. They are evil, pure evil. You don’t understand. You don’t know what they can do. Freezing you, what that Horror did before? That was nothing. Right now, the Dark Courts have more power than the Light because this world is so messed up. It used to be balanced.”

I needed a plan. I needed to contact Phoenix. She had been right all along. She had warned me but I didn’t listen. Damn it! Why didn’t I just listen to her?!

“Then what do these Light things do? Are they good?” Keira asked, startling me out of my thinking.

I laughed at the way she called us things “We’re not ‘things’ Keira. We’re Dreamers. The Wonders are good I guess. But I don’t know if they can help. The Dark Courts are more powerful right now. Not by much but they’re still stronger.”

“Right.” I could see her trying to make sense of everything I was saying. “And what about you?” she said finally, looking into my eyes, “you said you’re a rebel. What do you do?”

I debated whether to tell her the truth or not but finally decided too. “Rebels aren’t usually trusted. We’ve pretty much ditched our original Court so we lose the power to Dream as well as we used to. Us Dreamers can’t survive without Dreaming so we tend to kind of piggy back on other Dreamers. But that’s all complicated. You don’t need to know that.”

“Original Court? So what’s yours? Why’d you leave?” she asked almost suspiciously.

I laughed. This kid listened way too carefully. “I was part of the Light Court before. But I have my reasons for leaving. ”

“This is too much. This can’t be real. I am going to wake up soon and it’s all going to be a dream,” she said firmly shaking her head. “You are not going to be some creepy Horror thing or whatever and you are going to ignore me like usual.”

I sighed. I didn’t blame her but she would have to accept it sooner or later. “Go to bed Keira, this is enough fun for one day. I have to make some calls.”

Keira’s POV

This couldn’t be real. It’s just something my subconscious made up since I am definitely sleeping. Definitely. Either that or I must be delusional. That’s the only plausible explanation.

So I laid there on my bed, with light streaming through my window, wondering how far gone I was. Maybe my fear of the dark was a sign of my craziness. I hated the dark. It brought back memories that I couldn’t make sense of. A couple lying on the floor and a girl who was talking quietly to someone I couldn’t see. And then, when she looked at me, there were tears in her eyes but she smiled, she smiled right at me. I shook my head. Night time is not the time to think depressing thoughts. I just needed to sleep. Or wake up.
