Once again, she was late. She was never good with punctuality, so when it came down to school, it was always a problem.
"Eleanor!" Eleanor's mum shouted from the kitchen.
"I'm awake, mum!" She shouted back. Obviously she was awake, just nowhere near ready for school. Gradually, Eleanor got out of her comfortable bed and trotted over to the kitchen.
"Finally you're up. You're probably going to miss your bus, dear, so you'll have to walk." Eleanor's mum informed her. Most days she had to walk, but she didn't really mind. She liked the cold winter air.
"Okay." She muttered, too tired to properly reply. With that she trotted back down the hallway to her room and lazily got ready for school.
As she walked out of the small house she and her mum lived in, she felt the cold air hit her straight away. She shivered and pulled her coat closer to her body.
She approached her school and saw her best friend, stood outside the school gates looking as if he was in the Arctic.
"Elle! You've finally arrived! Took your damn time." Parker complained. He was always on time for school, and well, everything.
"Shut up, Park." Eleanor joked. They walked through the school gates and into the double doors where they both felt a huge gush of warm air.
"I don't think I've ever been so happy to be inside this dreadful building." Eleanor whispered, as the two manoeuvred their way through the crowds of students to get to their first lesson. As they walked through the classroom doors, Eleanor spotted a familiar face, one she hated to see on a daily basis.
"Ugh, I spot an asshole." Parker scoffed, sitting down at his desk.
"Words cannot explain how much I hate that guy." Eleanor replied, while also taking her seat. Parker nodded in agreement.
"Ah, and who exactly do we have here? A couple of nerds, eh?" Max laughed, as he walked over to the two and stood in front of them. Parker wasn't afraid of Max at all, so he glared right at him. Whereas, Eleanor was terrified, so she kept her head down.
"What do you want, Max?" Parker demanded harshly.
"Don't get rude, nerd. If you want to get rude to me, then let's fight, but it's pretty obvious who would win." Max replied mockingly.
"Sit down, sit down!" The teacher boomed whilst walking in and Max cockily walked back to his seat. "I have a project for you all. You're going to be split into pairs and you have to create a presentation on psychology and all that we've learnt so far. This project isn't just to see how well you've been listening and to see what you've learnt, but to test your social skills." She explained to the class. "I have put you into pairs myself so I shall read them out now: Jonathan and Kathy. Parker and Aimee. Max and Eleanor..." As soon as the teacher read out Eleanor's name along with Max's, she felt both Parker and Max staring at her. Parker for one, felt extremely sorry for her, but also a pang of anger. Whereas Max, wanted to make this project hell for her.
Once the bell rang, signifying the end of class, Eleanor immediately grabbed her things and bolted out of the classroom. However, Max managed to catch up with her.
"Oi, nerd!" She heard him shout and then he was suddenly right beside her. "For this stupid project, you're going to be doing all the work. We will meet tomorrow after school in that crappy library and I will help you, got it? Good." Max told her sternly, then walked away without expecting an answer.
"Eleanor! Wait up!" Parker called out to her. She stopped and turned around to face a confused Parker. "What the hell did that douche say to you?" He asked.
"He just said that I'm doing all the work for the project and I have to meet him tomorrow." Eleanor explained calmly.
"What an asshole. I can't believe she paired you with him. Does she not see how he treats you? She's so dumb."
"It's fine, honestly. I'll live. I just have to do the work and not say anything to him and then I'll be fine."
"We could go and tell her to change the partners-"
"Park. I'll be fine. Just leave it." Eleanor interrupted him. She said she would be fine, even though she fully well knew that she wouldn't. She knew it would be the worst time of her life.
