Sadie’s POV
We arrived back at where we were staying and I dismounted, letting myself collapse to the ground. I was exhausted. I couldn't believe I'd held Emma up that long.
Blaze eyed me for a moment. “What's wrong with you?” he asked.
“Your sister's heavy,” I answered, leaning against Stardancer.
“Are you okay, Sadie?” Emma asked as she dismounted.
“Yeah,” I said. “Just tired. In the future can we just knock guards out instead of hiding?”
She laughed. “Get some sleep. Nova, fire.”
Nova shot a plasma blast at the pile of wood nearby, starting a fire.
I closed my eyes as Stardancer covered me with a wing. I listened as Blaze and Emma sat by the fire and talked.
“You're absolutely sure you can trust her?” Blaze asked softly.
“Yes,” Emma said. “She rescued me from Drago a few months ago.”
“Drago? How did he get a hold of you?”
“I went there to rescue you and got caught.”
“By yourself?! Why didn't she go with you?”
“She didn't know I went. She went somewhere and left a note saying she'd be back later.”
“Where did she go?”
“I don't know. She didn't tell me.”
“Why not?” Blaze asked suspiciously.
“She didn't want to talk about it and I didn't push.”
I drifted off to sleep and didn't hear anything more.
“Don't even think about it,” I told Blaze the next morning. “I will pin you to the tree.”
I waited until I heard him move away before I opened my eyes, watching him as he set the canteen of water on the ground.
I had slept in this morning, I was so tired. I sat up and stretched. “Where's Emma?”
“Getting breakfast,” he answered.
I nodded and moved closer to the fire.
“So who are you?”
“The Nightrider,” I replied. “I told you.”
“You left my sister alone to go somewhere, where did you go?”
I looked up at him, studying him as he studied me right back.
“I got breakfast,” Emma said as she and Nova landed nearby with a bunch of fish they'd caught, saving me from answering. “Who’s hungry?”
“I'm starving,” I answered, moving to help with the fish.
“You slept late,” Emma said. “Feeling better?”
“Much,” I said. “Good as new.”
“Wonderful, because after breakfast we need to get moving. I saw some of Drago’s ships on the horizon.”
I nodded. “Let's hop to it then.”
Hours later we landed on a sea stack, not having found another place to stay yet. There was an island in the distance, but it was inhabited.
Blaze groaned. “How much farther?”
I looked out over the water. “Until we find a place to stay,” I said.
A dragon screeched above us and I looked up. A Nadder and Night Fury hovered above us then headed toward us. “Emma,” I said.
“I see them, let's move.”
We took off again, flying as fast as we dared though the stacks, but the two dragons stayed close behind us.
“The clouds,” Emma called and I nodded as we abruptly changed direction flying higher and disappearing into the clouds.
I jumped from Stardancer's back and turned to face the two dragons, only then did I realize they had riders.
I hovered in midair, my arms at my sides as Emma and the dragons flew away, waiting till the riders got close enough before raising them, holding them out on either side of me.
The riders stopped and I got a good look at them. A girl rode the Nadder. She had blond hair and blue eyes. The Night Fury carried a boy with auburn hair and emerald green eyes. Both stared at me in surprise as I brought both arms forward, a gust of wind carrying them back down toward the water.
I didn't wait to see if they'd recover, simply turned and headed after Emma and Blaze.
“Are they gone?” Emma asked once I had spotted them above the clouds.
“If they know what's good for them,” I replied.
I sunk just below the clouds to check just to be sure. Emma and Blaze joined me, scanning the world below for any sign of the riders.
“I think they're gone,” Blaze said, breaking the silence.
I nodded, flying back to the sea stack we were on.
“Guys,” Emma said suddenly. I followed her gaze to see Drago's ship.
“Great,” I muttered.
Arrows began flying in our direction. I ducked, dodging several arrows. “Stardancer, plasma blast!” My dragon shot the ship, though it did little damage from this distance.
Emma leaned back as an arrow flew in front of her. Her feet skidded back over the edge. She shrieked but was immediately caught by the strange Night Fury, ridden by the auburn-haired boy. She landed on the dragon’s back, grabbing the boy's shoulder to not fall off.
Emma peered at the boy cautiously who did the same to her. She whistled and her dragon came over. She leapt off of the other Night Fury and onto her own, hovering above the sea stack.
“I thought I told you to get lost,” I said, glaring hard at the guy.
“Yeah, well, fortunately for you, we don't listen very well,” the girl on the Nadder shot back.
A few more arrows whizzed past us.
“Hiccup, look out!” the girl shouted and the boy ducked as an arrow flew over his head.
“Alright,” I said, annoyed. “Let's play it your way.” I flew down towards the ship, circling it, using wind to force it to turn around then blowing into the sails, sending it sailing away. I landed on the sea stack again.
“That was...impressive,” the boy, Hiccup, said.
I ignored him. “You okay, Em?” I asked.
She nodded. “Yeah, thanks to you, I guess.” She gestured to Hiccup.
The girl studied Emma, noting the pattern on her arm, the purple sheen in her hair, and purple eyes.
“You're the Darkstalker,” she said. Then she looked at me. “And you're the Nightrider.”
