We've been traveling south for three days now, cutting through Montana and Wyoming to reach Colorado. I've only been outside for short trips between the car and whatever motel room we inhabit, making as little contact as possible with other human beings. I often found myself staring intensely at an object, my face void of emotion, until everything around it becomes but a cloud of color.
I was in the midst of one such episode, the subject being the fern patterned bedspread, when a gentle hand pressed on my shoulder.
"The boys are done," Kitty said.
I shook myself out of the daze and turned around. Earlier, we had decided to dye our hair (cliché, I know, but effective!) and since girls typically take longer, Cole and Thane went first.
"Ugh, I hate it!" Thane cries, "I'm too young for this look!"
His dark hair now had 'grey' streaks dispersed among the locks. Add the five o'clock shadow and he looked at least four years older.
"Hmm, I think you guys might have to be our aunt and uncle, you still look too young to be my dad." I say, circling around them, "You however, definitely look more like my brother now."
Cole's previously blonde hair has been transformed to a dark brown. He holds up the end of my ponytail to his head in comparison.
"Yeah, I can definitely see what you mean." He smiles into the mirror, "Always wondered what I'd look like with brown hair..."
"Alright, our turn!" Kitty grabs my hand and flies us into the bathroom.
"Good Lord," I cough at the permeating scent of hair dye, "I forgot how much I hate this smell."
My 'aunt' fake gags then grabs a box off the counter, "Let's see what color Thane bought for us..."
"Ooh, Dark Chocolate Rose," I read over her shoulder, "sounds delicious!"
"Hopefully it looks as good as it sounds!" she laughs.
"You get your hair wet, I'll read the directions." I smile.

A few hours later, we come out to the tantalizing scent of pizza. The boys are at the table watching a basketball game, which they mute when we walk out.
"I do hope you saved us a slice!" Kitty grins.
The looks on their faces are written with shock and surprise, and I laugh as we twirl around. I would call my hair a dark red/brown, just a few shades darker than my natural color. Kitty had cut my locks to just below shoulder length, bringing out the natural soft curls, and added long side-swept bangs across the top.
"You should totally consider being a stylist instead of a doctor!" I say to her.
"Hmm, if you say so." She smirks at the mirror.
Kitty's hair looks absolutely stunning. It was slightly lighter than mine, and was more auburn than brown, making her light eyes stand out in contrast.
"Wow, you look..." Thane tried to grasp for an adjective, which gave Cole the opportunity to finish for him.
"Horrible. I can't even recognize you." He scrunched his face at her.
"That's kind of the point here, so I'll take that as a backhanded compliment." she scoffs.
"Oh you two are so sweet, I'm dying of sweetness over here. Quick, someone catch me, I think I'm going to fai- oh!" I stumble dramatically, before falling backwards. Thane catches me, then sets me on the floor. "Too... sweet..." I gasp, then limply drop my hand.
