"can I sit here?"

abigail looked up from her book and quickly repositioned her glasses up onto her face

"you want to sit with me?" she questioned her eyebrows quirked.

"sure why not?" the boy replied as he placed his tray on the table taking the seat adjacent to abigals

"Well I don't really have the best reputation here well-really I have no reputation at all because no one likes to be around the weird girl." she put quotation marks up around the word weird

shawn swallowed his milk before he spoke "who says you're weird?"

"just about everyone." abigal shrugged

"so what if you're weird." the boy replied "It just means that you're different and this shitty ass world could use some different."

abigal smiled but her lips quickly contracted with embarrassment when she realized she had just flashed him her two shiny rows of braces that were decorated with blue rubber bands. she looked down, tucking her freshly straightened hair behind her ear.

she could feel him staring at her but she refused to look up.

and then a familiar ringing sounded in the loud speaker

the bell.

lunch was over.

had twenty minutes really already passed? abigal thought as she replaced her things into her bag.

It felt as if a minute ago this boy was just asking if he could sit next her.

and she wasn't ready for him to leave.

simply because she wanted to know more about him.

"I'll see you tomorrow beautiful."

"bye."

wait what?

Beautiful?

he just called me beautiful and it sounded genuine. Abigail thought as she made her way back to her literature class.
