Chapter Thirteen
"What do you want?" Killian scrawled as he picked up the phone. "I'm busy."
"I'll hang up if you have an attitude with me," I retorted. "I'm serious right now."
I heard static on the other end, and I wanted to pop his head off like a zit. He was just angry because I passed training and he didn't. "Fine, what do you want?"
"Where did you get your black Audi?"
"Uh, my aunt gave it to me? Why're you asking?"
"Oh, just curious, but, uh, what's your aunt's name?" Though I had dated Killian for a while, I had only met his parents and older sister.
"Paisley Everworth? She's my mom's sister."
Oh, hell yeah.
"Okay! Thank you!" I said loudly and hung up before he could say anymore.
Today was my day, I could feel it. All we had to do was gather all the cars in one location, which was totally going to be Miller's Junk Yard, and search Paisley's house one more time.
Oh, we got her bad.
I drove to my old grocery store to check up on things, just like Mr. Hue had asked. Also, I needed some lemons.
"Welcome back, RJ!" Sullivan shouted as I walked in. He was stacking chicken soup cans on the display like I showed him. No need to imagine chicken soup lakes with rowing chicken crackers. "Nice uniform."
"Hey, thanks. Where's Mr. Hue?"
"I think he's in the back."
I waved and turned, running smack into Skid. "Hi!"
"Oh, you've decided to come back?" Skid asked, taking shoe polish to the back room. I started to follow her, but she stopped me. "You can't come back here, Redford. Employees only."
"Oh, come on, Mr. Hue told me I could get the change I left in my cubby."
"That was yours? Well, it's gone now."
Skid was being very prissy, which irked me. She was never like this before. "Fine, I'll just get Mr. Hue."
"He left like an hour ago with this older lady, Paisley, I think?" Skid told me, and then shut the back room door in my face.
Oh, Redford, you need to go.
I turned on my heel and ran out of the door, the lemons no longer a priority, Mr. Hue was. I couldn't have Paisley kill another person right under my nose.
I decided halfway down the road that I wasn't going to drag Greene or Caster or Aaron into this, but that it was time to tell Hancock. He picked halfway through the second ring.
"Ford?"
"Hey, I'm going to explain everything to you, and then I want you to meet me by Miller's, okay?"
I quickly, but carefully explained everything that had happened and what I believed what was going to happen. Hancock simply said, "Okay, I'll see you in five minutes."
We pulled into Miller's at the same time and Hancock got into my car, giving me a quick peck on the cheek. "I think I passed her on the interstate, Ford, in the green jeep with the HOLLY tag. We have to go that way."
