Chapter Fourteen
Greene knocked on the window and I unlocked the car for him. We were about halfway down the road before I piped up.
"What did she say?" I asked as we drove past the station. "Where are we going?"
"Did you know that every single one of Paisley's family members, minus her sister's husband and children, has a large incredible rap sheet?"
Oh, did I know.
I lied, "Only kinda. That boy, Killian, is her nephew, but I didn't know until like two days ago, but- Greene where are we going?"
He took a left onto interstate twenty-seven. My heart leapt into my throat and heebie-jeebies frazzled my body. Greene spoke to me, never taking his eyes off the road, "Paisley's grandsons, Starch and Huntley, are the ones we're after, yeah? They switched her cars and helped her kill her first two victims, Dustin Green and Alexander Kyle."
Redford, you've definitely gotten yourself into a boat load here.
"Oh."
"Yeah," Greene sounded out of breath, even though he was sitting. Dustin and Alexander's license photos were stuck to the fresh hubba bubba that was stuffed through my ears. All the photos were in my overdramatic thoughts cabinet, but they didn't belong there. They were serious, not overdramatic.
Greene's speedometer was rising up, up, up, and I felt nausea churning in my abdomen. The Wicked Witch of the West was there, mixing my stomach acid with her dead sister's legs. The ruby slippers were floating in the corner. "Greene, watch your speed!"
We hit one-twenty and Greene simply flipped on the sirens so he could continue to speed. I had never gone this fast in my entire life. I remember one year when I was six, we took a family trip to Disney World. Mission: SPACE was the only ride I wanted to experience, and we chose orange, which was 'only for the extreme'. The thing went off so fast and it was so terrible that Jet, Brian, and I all threw up after it was over. Greene, however, his driving was worse.
"We're almost there," he told me, taking an extremely sharp turn and pulling off interstate twenty-seven. His speed decreased indefinitely, and I was more than grateful. "They live here, look."
He whipped the car into the gravel driveway, the small rocks crunching under the tires. The pathway led up to a tiny white farm house, with vines crawling up through the panels. We cautiously made our way to the house, our feet uneven on the ground. Greene turned towards me, "You stay at the bottom of the stairs, and I'll call you in if I need you."
"No, Greene. I'm going in with you."
He started to argue but I pursed my lips and cocked my head. He wasn't going to win this. As we stepped into the yard where the gravel stopped, my feet sunk two inches. "Is this mud?"
"I can't tell."
We stepped lightly onto the porch and I pushed my finger so hard on the doorbell the tip turned red. Greene swatted my arm away after I held the button down for approximately twenty seconds. That was the maximum of irritant I could stand. I counted to sixty-two in my head and moved to ring again, when the door opened.
A girl appeared in the shadows from the house. Personally, I was confused, because the security footage Jules showed me displayed two boys.
