Protecting You (An InuYasha Fanfic)

Chapter One: Attack on the Village

"Inuyasha!" Kagome called. "Inuyasha! Where are you?"

"I'm right here." He replied, leaping down from a nearby tree branch. "No need to yell so loud, ya know."

Kagome put her hands on her hips. "Where were you? We've been looking for half an hour!"

"I can go for walks if I wanna!"

She scowled at her husband, then sighed. She still couldn't get used to the fact that she had recently gotten married to Inuyasha, and while she was very happy about it, Inuyasha was still a pain in the neck sometimes, husband or not.

"Whatever. Let's just head back to the village. It's getting late, and you know what that means."

"Yeah, yeah. The demons come out. I know. I'll just kill them all."

"Not even you can fight day after day!"

"Are ya doubting me?"

"No, no. I'm just telling you what I know."

"You are doubting me! I'll----"

Inuyasha froze and cut off his sentence, his body tense, sniffing the air.

"What's wrong, Inuyasha?"

"Shh!" He hissed, his ears pricked. Then his eyes widened. "Impossible!"

"What's impossible?"

"For a second----I thought I smelled-----"

Suddenly, the peace and quiet was broken by the sound of roars and screams. Kagome gasped. Demons! Attacking the village!

"Hurry, Kagome! Get on!"

"Right!"

Kagome climbed up onto Inuyasha's back, and the two of them raced back towards the village at top speed, praying that they would make it in time.

As they arrive, Kagome's throat tightened. All around them, demons were attacking villagers, numbering in the several dozens. Houses were lit ablaze, villagers ran around in panic, and children wailed.

"Kagome!" An elderly woman hobbled over as fast as she could manage, leaning on her cane and a young girl, who was helping her along.

"Kaede! Rin!" Kagome called. "What's going on?"

"The demons suddenly attacked for no reason! It was perfectly normal, then they appeared out of no where!" Rin explained, her eyes round with fear. "There're so many! How are we going to defend the village?"

"Leave it to us." Another voice spoke. Kagome turned, and saw Sango and Miroku hurrying over with Kirara, their three children riding atop the demon cat's back.

"Sango! Miroku!"

"We'll handle this, Kagome. After all, we have our children to protect." Miroku said, wielding his staff and slashing through a demon that came too close for comfort. Sango heaved her Hiraikotsu from her back at launched it outwards, slicing through demon after demon before returning to her hand.

 "Rin!" Kagome ordered. "Take Kaede to a safe place, and wait until the demons are gone."

"Yes!" Rin hurried off with Kaede, heading for the cave near the village.

Kagome grabbed her bow and quiver of arrows. "Let's go, Inuyasha!"

"That's my line!"

Half an hour later, Kagome was beginning to get worried. The demons just kept on coming, no matter how many were killed of Purified. The only thing that kept them from completely devouring the village was the barrier that Kagome and Miroku put up around the houses holding women and children, like  large protective bubbles.
