Chapter 6

The cold, early morning mist hung heavily in the air, settling lightly on the scenery, forming a thin layer of dew. As the majestic Frisians stepped forward, the pale green grass stalks crumpled under their weight. Together the girls slid off of their horses, and landed lightly in the small amount of foliage. They stepped away from the thick, worn path, onto a minute, grass covered one. The brush that lingered on the edge of the trail was thick, and bare. It snagged on their clothes as they led their horses up the short path. As they rounded the top of the small hill the path widened, and the brush thinned. They got back on their horses and set off, up the forested slope of the mountain.

Clara led the way as they trudged up through the thick underbrush. She had to duck her head as a low branch came into view. The tops of her horses’ ears skimmed the branch; she shrunk down into the base of her saddle. Close behind her she noticed Ali do the same. The branch passed over her head, and she straightened up again.

Ahead, Clara saw that part of the path branched off onto a tiny, and much shabbier one. As she approached she turned her horse to face it. He calmly stepped forward into the dark unknown.
