P r o l o g u e
I ran across a pebbly path and jumped over the old wooden gate, the warm breeze causing my long caramel hair to fly wildly over my shoulders. I felt the warmth of the summer sun on my shoulders and smiled.
“Ryan, slow down!” I yelled as we rushed through the long grass.
“No way, stop being so slow!” He replied as he laughed and ran even faster.
Ryan and I did this every summer. Our mum’s would organise a play-date and we would race down valleys, climb the biggest trees and draw huge chalk drawings on the pavement. I looked forward to this moment every year, as Ryan lived in Australia, so we were hardly able to speak to each other. Realising I was losing this race; I decided to take a shortcut across the woods. I ran across the muddy paths, leaping over the logs and ducking to avoid the low hanging branches of the oak trees. I saw a small opening in the distance and squeezed through the narrow gap causing the thorns to scratch against my leg. Hearing Ryan in the distance yelling something about cheating, I ran across the remaining length of the field and touched the acorn tree.
Ryan came rushing down a few minutes later his dark hair strewn across his tanned face.
“Lex, you need to stop cheating in these races!” He said as he lightly pushed me onto the grass.
He slumped down next to me in exhaustion, and was about to offer up another race but was interrupted by my mum calling us in for some snacks.
“Lex, look at the state of yourself! You are covered in mud, grass, blood and who knows what else! How many times have I told you t…”
I let her voice drone into the distance as I thought about Ryan and how he is probably one of the best friends I have, even better than my school friends. I reminisced about our memories, even though I am only 6 and he is 7, we seem to have a lot. I imagined us in the future doing all sorts of things; going to secondary school together, sharing a massive house, having a really expensive car…
“LEX! Are you even listening?”
“What?” I replied slightly confused
“Never mind, let’s just go and sort out your hair.”
I followed her upstairs and sat on the chair as she stood behind me and tugged at the knots in my hair. She then put it into a long plait that fell neatly down my back. Although I was more of a tomboy, I loved it when my mum did my hair. She then proceeded to wipe at the mud and dirt on my arms and leg. I sat as still as possible only wincing slightly as she went over the deep cut the thorns had created. When she was done I ran downstairs to meet Ryan outside by the acorn tree. He began to challenge me to a second race, but I stopped him saying I had something to give him. I got out a white bracelet from my pocket. My grandma taught me how to make it last year, before she passed away. I always loved my grandma. She said to give it to the person I loved most, and I couldn’t think of anyone other than Ryan.
“Here, I made it myself”
“Eww, I can’t have this!”
“Why not?” I asked offended by his rejection
Ryan scoffed “It’s a girl’s bracelet. I’m a boy.”
“No it can be for any-”
“No! Boy’s don’t wear bracelets!” he said laughing and starting into a run.
"Wait, one more thing."
"What? I wanna race!"
"Just, promise we will be friends forever."
"Yeah, sure, whatever, now let's go!" he said running into the woods
I quickly stuffed the bracelet into my pocket and chased after him.
