Having not seen Mark in two years, I was not expecting him back. I didn’t want him back. He had been involving himself in some dodgy things drugs, theft, fights and who knew what else. But I think the most part of why I didn’t want him back was because he knew what he did hurt us. It was almost like he did it to cause us pain, like he hated us. But over time I grew to hate him.
“Lex could you go get your brother a drink of water, he’s been travelling for about seven hours.” I heard my mother call from the living room.
“It’s not my fault that his life is such a wreck he had to go to a prison halfway around the world” I muttered under my breath while briefly filling a glass with tap water.
“Thank you, my throat is so parched after that journey.” Mark said as he brushed his sweeping fringe from his face. “So how has things been around here Lex?”
“Fine.” I said stubbornly. “How was prison?”
I felt my mum’s eyes glare into the back of my neck but I kept my strong stern gaze fixed on Mark. As I felt the cold atmosphere fill the room I turned on my heel and proceeded to walk towards the door.
“Lex” he grabbed my arm and I fiercely shook it away. “Look you have go to understand that I have changed. I want to repair our relationship; I want us to be close again. In prison I had time to re-evaluate my life. I went to rehab, I stopped hanging out with that crowd… Please Lex, give me another chance.”
“Err… Mark, why don’t you give Lex a little time to take this all in?” my mum said as she ushered Mark into the kitchen.
I shut myself in my room and plugged my iPod into its docking station and let the music drown out the thoughts running through my mind. I realized that it was getting late and that I hadn’t even made a start on my homework, yet I still decided to pull out my sketchbook and start doodling.
“Lex, your father and I are going out for dinner with a few friends.” I heard my mum call from downstairs. “Ella has fallen asleep and I left some money for pizza on the counter if you are hungry. We aren’t going to be back till about 3am, so please don’t sleep too late.”
“Ok, sure. Bye!” I called before realising that I was tired and slowly drifting to sleep

There are many things that have always annoyed me. Being woken up after a mere hour of sleep by loud music is one of them. Now seeing that my brother had supposedly changed for the better, the last thing he was supposed to be doing was throwing a party. Wiping the sleep out of my eyes, I slowly managed to drag my body downstairs. I had to commend him, the party looked great, and the fact he pulled it off so quickly amazed me, but nevertheless I was still planning to murder him as soon as I laid my eyes on him. I scanned the room, but everything just seemed to be a blur of drunk teenagers and flashing lights. I didn’t know whether it was the heat or just the condensed amount of sweaty people, but for some reason I felt really dizzy and claustrophobic. I edged my way over to the other side of the room and poured myself some punch to try and clear my mind a bit, but coughed violently as the sharp taste of vodka burned my throat. A spiked drink. How typical.
I made my way back to the living-room in search for my brother, with little success, and ended up just sitting down on the sofa.
“Hi!” I looked over to see a tall boy with messy hair slump down next to me.
“Ermm… Do I know you?”
“Allow me to introduce myself, I am Raymond. You go to school with my older brother.”
“Lex. Hey, aren’t you that kid from year 8. How did you even get into this party?”
“You know connections and stuff. Speaking of connections, can you feel that?”
“I’m sorry, what?”
“Can you feel the connection?”
“I really have no idea what you are talking about, so if you would just kindly-“
“Don’t deny it. You know that the minute you started talking to me your life just got better-“
“Excuse you”
“If you are trying to confess your love, I’m not saying no-“
“Are you drunk?”
“Maybe… But not if you don’t want me to be.”
“Listen kid, I don’t know what you are playing at. But if you think I will go out with some egotistic, intoxicated 11 year old.”
“Well, actually I’m 12, 13 next August. Haven’t you heard the expression a number is an age?”
“I believe you mean age is but a number, however someone is just not understanding the concept of rejection.”
“You know you just want to ask me out.”
“Please, go ahead! The door is there.” I replied gesturing towards the door as I stood up and left him sitting on the sofa.
I realised that it was nearing 11 o’clock, and was losing any hope that I would find him. Suddenly, I heard distant shouting from the front garden and walked outside to see what was happening.
“Mark! What is this supposed to be! How could you throw a party, and you said you had become a better person, like that’s ever going to happ-“
“Lex! This is not the time.” He said sharply
“Well, look at this seems like Mark here has a- I’m sorry who are you?”
I looked up to face three men wearing black leather jackets. “I’m his sister. And what are you supposed to be? That’s a rather gothic outfit choice you have there.”
“Ooohh, mouthy over here has got an attitude. Grab her.”
“Lex, run!” I heard my brother plead, but it was too late and before I knew it one of the shorter guys had already twisted my arms behind my back.
I tried to wrestle myself free but the man responded by punching my jaw causing blood to trickle out of my lip. I tried to scream for help, but he used one hand to tightly grip my neck blocking my airways. I was finding it more and more difficult to breathe and all I could hear was my heart pounding in my ears, when he dropped me onto the floor. I heard them rev their motorbikes and drive away as the sounds of the police sirens grew nearer. I tried to sit up, my breathing heavy and rapid, but fell back down and slowly everything around me faded into darkness.
