Author's Note: you can go ahead and watch the video alongside this bible study if you want to, but I won't relate to it until part four. Just a heads up :)
Part 1
I'd like to start off with a bit of detailed information. If the facts are wrong, I'm sorry, I must've written them down wrong, so let me apologize in advance. I do not claim to know these things naturally. So after that general disclaimer....
Apple has recently become one of the most popular brand of computers sold today. That may be common knowledge. What most people don't know, however, is that the widely known name brand was considered a joke when it was first created. People made fun of it, and the corporation even had to borrow a loan from Microsoft. Branching off of the topic, Apple produced an ad called "Think Different". This seemed to turn things around and improve their sales. Why? Because they thought differently than other companies and it paid off.
Ever heard of the following names? Martin Luther King Jr., Amelia Earhart, Jim Henson. All these people changed the world just by thinking different. There's someone in the Bible we can compare all these people to, and his name is Jesus. Think about it. Jesus taught the opposite of everything that had ever been taught before. He challenged the minds of everyone who heard his teachings, which revolutionized how people thought of God.
Of course, as with the other men and women who thought uniquely, Jesus had some people who hated him. Why? Simply because he thought differently. It doesn't seem to make much sense, but that's what happened. Jesus was scorned and hated because of what he did. He saved many by forgiving them, and the people who hated Jesus couldn't wrap their minds around the concept of forgiveness. Anyway, I'll make another Bible Study that covers the difference between the Old Testament laws and what Jesus taught. Hmmm, maybe that'll be my next one. You'll see.....
So now what I'd like to discuss are reasons why people follow the crowd. Life is hard during any time, but it's especially difficult during our teenage years. Decisions we make, including the friends we place around us, can change our lives drastically. Or they can never make a difference at all. You may never know. So, back to the question. Why do people follow the crowd, the trend, whatever's "the coolest thing" at the time?
Here's one reason. Maybe they want to fit in. I can't speak for everyone, though, because I do not wish to fit in. I have never wished to be like everyone else. So if you're just like me or if you can relate to me at least a little, don't worry, you're not alone. Not everyone wants to fit in, and I think that's great. But for those who do, let's try to get into their mindsets.
Maybe you change your appearance to fit in. You think that if you wear the right clothes, buy more or better quality makeup, maybe, just maybe then you'll fit in. What about inward appearance? Would you change your personality so others would like you? If you think that you have to change for others, please don't. I will try hard to create a Bible Study on confidence and self-worth for all you ladies and guys. I'm not a guy, but I'm pretty sure that males can have low self-esteem, too. But for now, please don't change anything about yourself and listen to Try by Colbie Caillat. She's amazing.
Okay, back to the point. We're so used to fitting in that we almost don't know any different. Even science teaches us that blending in is the best way to survive. This tactic usually applies to animals, although it could work with humans as well.
A second reason why people might follow the crowd is because sometimes it's easier to act like everyone else. Notice I said sometimes; it depends on the situation. If you're in college, it's likely that most students dress casually. If you're in school, however, most students dress nicer, depending on what kind of school you go to. In college, it takes less effort to fit in than in high school, at least in my opinion.
