Ellie and Joel have rejoined Tommy at his camp back in Wyoming after Joel had promised Ellie that there were more immune people, like her and that the Fireflies had stopped looking for a cure for the fungal infection.
As time slowly passes by, it's four years later and Ellie is now eighteen and Joel is around his mid-fifties.
Humanity is still trying to regain control in the year 2037, the Fireflies are still trying to find a cure, but success is slim.
Tommy now has a three year old son who was born in winter of 2034. Tommy and Maria's son's name is Xavier. Ellie helps take care of Xavier; he is three now and he looks a lot like Ellie, just not in a girl way.
As summer sets in at the Wyoming camp where Ellie and Joel are, a new danger is inflicted upon them; the Fireflies have returned and are once again looking for Ellie and other immune people.
Will Joel's lies be unfolded as Ellie finds out the Fireflies want her once more? Or will Ellie keep believing that living was worth while? Will she leave and die or will she fight to the death to save her new family and her own life?
