Jocks and Nerds

BEEP BEEP BEEP!

I groaned as my alarm went off and I hit the button to shut it off. I'm Marcel Styles. I'm the nerdy kid in school that nobody likes to be around and everyone makes fun of. I groan as I stand up, getting out of bed, as I dread to walk into school. I throw on my usual dorky clothes, fix my hair, put on my glasses, and go downstairs, my mum greeting me in the kitchen as usual.

"Hey honey." She sighs.

"Hi mum." I tiredly reply. I know she hates seeing me in my usual clothes because every year I get bullied for being a dork. She's always tried getting me to wear different clothes but I always tell her that I just want to be myself. I hate disappointing her but she just doesn't get it.

I sit down and eat a bowl of cereal. My mum stands up and pecks my cheek.

"Bye Marc, I have to get to work." She smiled.

"Okay mum, bye." I waved and watched her close the door behind her.

I hated how my mom had to go to work so early. This means I had to walk to school because I still didn't have my license yet.

I sighed and cleaned up my breakfast, grabbed my backpack and walked out the door.

It was the usual silent walk to school. I actually enjoy it sometimes, I have to admit. Listening to the birds chirp and humming music quietly to myself without anyone else hearing me. That's what I'd like to always keep to myself, no one actually knows that I enjoy singing except for my mum because I tell her everything of course.

As I reached the school I noticed the usual jocks at the place where they usually stand outside of the school doors. I kept my head down trying not to be noticed at all. Thankfully they were all laughing at a joke someone made and didn't noticed me.

I walked quickly to my locker, turned the dial, grabbed my books for first period, and hurriedly went to class.

First period is math, my best subject. I always get excited for this class because I always get all my work done really fast and so I never have homework and I practically don't have anything to do for the rest of the class hour. I just put my earbuds in and shut out the rest of the world.

I hated the time lunch came around because that's when I'm most exposed. By that I mean, it's the time when a lot of the jocks gang up on me. I try and hide myself as much as humanly possible. Once, I even tried hiding behind the dumpster but that will never happen again because that smell was absolutely terrible!

I honestly have no clue where I'm going to sit today. Maybe in the corner of the cafeteria? Yeah, that'll work.

I smile to myself and walk towards the spot I was going to sit in before SMACK!

I came face to floor. I turned my whole body around to see who it was that tripped me. I was still sitting on the ground when I saw who it was.

Nick. Nick Anderson. The kid who has bullied me since elementary just because of how I look.

"Well look who we have here." His frightening voice says. I slowly look up at him.

"My pal since elementary school, Marcel." He smirks. He brings his hand up and I brace myself, getting ready for a punch when I feel him lifting me my the collar of my shirt and pinning me against the wall. I can feel everyone's stares. Just watching us. Doing nothing.

"So, it looks like no one wants to help poor little Marcel here." He laughs. "That's because nobody likes you. And nobody ever will." He gets so close to my face, it's scary. Tears threaten to fall when I realize that he's right. No one likes me, no one will ever help me from getting punched and shoved around, I might as well drop out of public school and be homeschooled.

I feel one tear fall down my cheek when I hear a loud voice, breaking the silence in the huge cafeteria.

"Hey man, don't you think the kid has had enough beatings to last the rest of the school year?" I look up to see Louis Tomlinson. The star football player and Nick's best friend. But why would he be trying to help me? I'm a nobody. Nick just keeps glaring at me and tries to ignore Louis.

Louis grips onto his arm. "Let him go." Louis is now glaring at Nick.

Nick clenched his teeth and surprisingly obeyed and let go of me. I landed on the ground with a thud. I watched as Louis pointed to the direction of the gym. "You should be at practice right now anyways, now run before I tell coach to kick you off the team."

Nick nodded with wide eyes and ran out the cafeteria. Louis crouched down beside me and whispered "Hey, are you alright? He didn't hit you, did he?"

I shook my head. "N-No he didn't."

He smiles. "Well if he ever tries starting something with you again, just tell me and I'll straighten him out." And he runs out of the cafeteria, glancing at me once more.

I sat there shocked. More some strange reason I couldn't move. All I could do was sit there with my mouth wide open thinking, why in the heck did he just do that?

The rest of the day seemed pretty normal but I just couldn't shake the thought of Louis out of my head. What he did was incredible and I need to repay him in some way. I'm just now sure how.

I walked back home and saw my mum sitting on the couch drinking some tea.

She looked up at me, "How was your day sweetie?"

I actually smiled for once in a long time after school and said, "It was absolutely terrific."

"Really?" She seemed shocked. I laughed and told her everything that happened today.

"Well to me it sounds like you and this Louis guy could be really good friends."

I shook my head, "Nah, he is one of them jocks and I'm just nerdy Marcel." She smiled sympithically at me because we both knew it was true. I just shrugged and walked up to bed, hoping to have a dream where Louis saved me once again.
