Chapter 4 : Part 1
Nicole's POV

My mother and I had been driving for about 30 minutes, when we finally pulled up to a very familiar church.
"Mama, what are we doing here?" I finally asked.
She didn't say anything and just motioned me to follow her.
I listened and trailed behind.
As we walked up the huge, stone steps, I couldn't help but think about how many emotions l was feeling.
Weird, mixed emotions of sadness and joy were building inside me & I didn't know why.
I let the feelings go & continued to follow my mother as we walked straight to the church's large wooden doors.

We walked inside and it was even more beautiful than the outside.
The ceiling was aligned with colorfully crystalized images of La Virgen de Guadalupe & el niño Dios.
The walls were covered with vibrant colored cloths and everything felt safe.
It was absolutely breathtaking.
"Nicole, come on. " my mother called, interrupting my train of thought.
"Ay voy, mama." I responded and continued to think.
I now recognized where I knew this place from.
This was my dad's old church & it was in here that I had last seen my dad alive.
I decided to keep my thoughts to myself for now & followed my mother once again.
I followed her, until we saw a short elderly man, probably in his 60s, come out from a room.
I assumed he was el Padre.
"Wait here, Nicole." my mother said and I obeyed.
I found a bench near by & sat down.
"What is going on?Why would she bring me to Papa's church?" I thought to myself.
I looked down at my hand and noticed Richard's phone number was rubbing off.
"I should probably text him now & let him know that I can't make it." I thought to myself and pulled out my phone.
As I began to type his number ,my phone vibrated.
It was a message from Catherine.

Nicki, where are u?!? I knocked on ur door like 1000 times & no answer. U okay??
I finished typing in Richard's number & went on to answer Cat.

Things are complicated. I don't know what happened, but I have a feeling that Miguel is back. I can't really say much about where I am, but just know I'm ok.
I finished typing and pressed send.
It wasn't really a good response,but I couldn't just go around revealing my location to anyone, not even Cat.
It wasn't safe for me or my mom.
Miguel was certainly back for revenge & things were too dangerous.

My phone vibrated again.

Cat was the only person that knew I had the deepest crush on Richard.
She knew way before I told her.
Apparently her "best friend powers" helped her, but I know it was my staring in lunch that gave it away.
She was also the only person outside of the family, that knew about the problems with Miguel, my step dad.

I decided to go ahead & listen to Cat.
I wanted to talk to Richard now more than ever.
& I had to break the news to him since it was the best.
It was gonna be hard though.
I really wanted to go, but making the decision of flying to Miami from New York needed months planning, not 1 day and half. & Miguel's arrival was not helping the situation get any better, so I began to type.
