Katherine Ollivander sat on the roof of Happy Child Orphanage in Kansas City, Missouri, winding a leafy vine around a polished stick. "Kath-er-iiiiiiine!" A voice came from the yard and she sighed, rolling her eyes. Of course Mrs. Henderson would call her now. Of course! "I'm COM-ING!" She yelled back, shimmying down the drainpipe and shoving the stick into her pocket.

15 minutes later, she and her best friend Zoe Smith were washing dishes in the kitchen when  the curfew bell rang. Zoe and Kat glanced at each other- the dishes weren't done yet! "You go," Kat muttered. "I'll be right behind you."

Zoe nodded tensely and slipped out the kitchen door. Kat grabbed an ivy-wrapped stick from her other pocket and pointed it at the dishes. They cleaned themselves and zipped to the dishwasher. Then Kat stuffed it down her pocket and ran upstairs. It was her 11th birthday tonight. She didn't want to be late.

At exactly midnight, she was back on the roof, anxiously scanning the night sky. At 12:01, two flying shapes appeared, one of whom was Kat's grandfather's companion owl, Tawna.

"Tawna!" Kat called softly. "Here!"

Both owls swooped towards her. Tawna settled on her shoulder and the other owl dropped a letter at her feet and swooped off.

Tawna extended her leg towards Kat, who quickly untied her letter. "I'm going to Hogwarts!...I'm going to Hogwarts! I wonder who's coming with me..." she sang quietly, picking up the letter at her feet. "Lumos." she murmured, taking her wand out of her pocket and waving it over the letter. "Zoe...Smith! Zoe's coming with me! Zoe's coming with me! YEEAAAAAHHOOOOOOO!" she yelled, jumping up and down excitedly.

Tawna startled and flew off Kat's shoulder, just as Zoe's head peeked out of the window. "Keep it down, Kat..." she murmured sleepily.

"Zoe! Guess what guess what guess what?" Kat said excitedly.

"Chicken butt."

"No...it has to do with Harry Potter!"

Zoe gasped, suddenly awake. "Is a new book or movie coming out?"

"Better!" Kat exclaimed, tossing Zoe her letter.

"Oh my gosh!" exclaimed Zoe. "This had better not be a prank, Kat."

"It isn't," Kat said grinning. "I'm going too!"
