Phil rubbed his eyes as he woke up from his sleep. He yawned, stretching his arms out and grabbing for his glasses. He hated wearing them. Why did his eyes have to be so messed up? He looked at the time. 9:34 AM. Ugh, he thought. Why did I have to wake up so early? After always staying up late on the internet with his flatmate and best friend, Dan, waking up early felt like a crime.
Phil slowly picked himself up to a sitting position, yawning again and trudging towards the bathroom. When he had reached his destination, he slid his contacts in and his glasses off. He quickly fixed his hair, which had become a messy quiff overnight.
A rustling and loud groaning from Dan's room made him jump slightly. He chuckled when he heard an annoyed, "Are you kidding me?" followed by a sound that had to be Dan rolling off his bed in disgust.
Phil peeked his head out of the bathroom to see Dan with his naturally curly brown hair slowly opening the door. Dan almost looked surprised to see a man with black hair staring back at him. "Oh, 'morning, Phil. Wasn't expecting you to be awake so early.. Did you hear all that?"
Phil only grinned in response. He noticed his best friend's face turn a bright pink, but he knew they would both just laugh it off and be done with it.
Or not.
Dan stayed completely silent, staring at the floor.
Before Phil could ask if something was wrong, Dan had looked up again. "Anyway, why don't we go eat? Might as well, since we're both already awake."
Phil nodded slowly, suspicious of Dan's actions. But he shrugged it off as they headed to the kitchen. He reached for a box of cereal, pouring it into a bowl and walking towards the fridge. As he went to pick up a milk carton, he noticed that there was none.
"Are we out of milk already?" he called out. He heard Dan's footsteps coming near him and felt him peeking over his shoulder.
"Guess so" was the only response he got.
Phil looked over at his best friend quizzically. "Dan, is something wrong?"
"What? No. Everything's fine."
"You don't sound fine."
"Phil, I'm fine."
The black-haired man looked at his flatmate one more time, growing concerned with every moment. "Right.." he said after a few long seconds. "Well, better go get the milk, then."
Dan looked away. "Um, actually, I think I'm gonna stay home. It's a bit too early for me to go out."
Phil sighed. "Alright, fine." He looked at the time. 9:41. He hurried to his room, quickly putting on a shirt and pants and walking to the door. "I'll be back at around 10," he called, with no response.

Twenty minutes later. Phil had just walked in the door. "I'm home!" he yelled. No response. "Dan?" Nothing. He walked to the kitchen, placing the two milk jugs he had gotten into the fridge. He turned around. There was a piece of paper on the counter. He picked it up slowly, reading over it carefully.
Phil,
If you're reading this, you're probably back from the store. Twenty minutes later, just like you said. I know you would keep your promises, even small things like that. I went back to sleep - if you need me, I'm in my room.
Phil frowned. Why would Dan need to write a note telling him he went back to bed? He put the paper down, slowly walking towards Dan's room.
What he saw when he opened the door was the worst thing he could ever imagine.
"No.." he whispered to himself. "No, this.. this can't be happening. Dan! Dan, wake up!"
He crawled towards the body of his best friend, didn't care if the blood of his best friend poured onto him when he hugged it, took the knife that had killed his best friend away from the hand of his best friend. He needed his best friend. How could he live without his best friend? He held the knife up to his throat. He wanted to slit his throat, let it end before the pain became too brutal on him.
But he stopped himself.
He slowly put the knife back down. He was shaking all over, tears running down his cheeks, pain from his head to his toes. He had lost his best friend. He needed to keep living, for his best friend. For Dan. For someone he had loved for a long time, but he never had the guts to say those three words.
"I love you," Phil whispered.
And suddenly, he was back in his bed, the tears dried from his face, Dan's blood gone from his body, but the image of his best friend's dead body still fresh in his mind.
He looked at the clock.
9:34 AM.
