No, seriously stop the abuse: if it has no repercussions at all. I'm talking about those stories where the main protagonist gets abused and they, primarily female, have no long-lasting effects from it. If your character suddenly wakes up one day after years of terrible abuse and poof becomes a "bad ass" then you need to rewrite that plot hole. They can't just do that! Thats not even the slightest bit possible! Abuse takes years or even a lifetime to get over, not just a day! You fall into a deep depression, you question whether or not it's worth to even get up in the morning, wether the person who told you every day you were a piece of feces was right.
But "Mollarcat" you say "sometimes you just snap and stand up to the person treating you like garbage" you aren't wrong, you do eventually snap but guess what? You immediately feel like cow dung, and you want to know what it costs you? A whole 'nother helping of mental anguish and gasslighting.they never let that one instance go let me tell you. they are your abusers, they thrive on making you feel like the worst person in the universe... and you believe them.
The worst about this is, is that this is a pretty popular trend here on Wattpad. It's the same old story: girl gets rejected by some popular guy after being abused by everyone around her (sometimes even sexually) and either snaps and stands up for herself and runs away, or writes a passive aggressive note and runs away. Then she usually finds some people who immediately accept her and she suddenly trusts them! I'm sorry it doesn't work like that! You don't trust anyone! You don't suddenly feel, after years of abuse, that you can trust the first person who shows some form of kindness to you! You know why? Because the person who abused you did that. They were kind to you sometimes..... It enabled you to make excuses for them. "Everyone has mood swings." "Maybe they're just having a bad day." "Maybe I deserved this somehow." "people go through worse, I'm just over reacting." That's why you could forgive them. That's why you didn't tell accept that it was abuse sooner.
Look, I don't care If someone writes a story with a character who was or is being abused, but for goodness sakes when your character has no mental signs/scars of the abuse then that there a problem.
