The First Hunt (Prologue)

A crack broke the silence of the dark thicket that surrounded me. Something moved among the copse. I darted my head in the general direction of the crack in an attempt to find the creature which lurked among the shadows of the trees. Nothing. I felt the smooth summer wind pass across my face. It was almost night and I was getting hungry. I tensed and let out a deep breath, I didn't want to let my father down. Suddenly a nearby branch moved as if being provoked. There it was: my dinner and my father's expectations. I let go of the bowstring that I had been holding for such a long time. The joy I felt was incomparable; I had killed the deer.

I approached the game that lay upon the bluestem. I picked up the deer and slung it across my shoulder. I made my way out of the grove and began my walk home, a smile on my face. My father would be very happy.
