Well that could have gone worse. I explained my situation over a text and as we were on our way back to the usual room we eat our lunch and do our work in I received a phone call in which I had to pretend it was my mother. You see, if I made out it was anyone different it would have attracted attention which would have been fine but Amelia was in front of us and jabbering away about Sam. Obviously he was my mystery caller so I couldn't give anything away; especially as there were complaints coming from in front of us that they didn't even have his phone number yet.
Bursting into the classroom I managed to finish off the conversation, being more specific this time. It was agreed. In school we would remain distant but at training we would catch up and gossip our way through everything. That makes it more fun, someone to talk school about at swimming and moan about teachers like the others do... especially a hot someone. He was upset at first but I think we managed to overcome the issue by being honest and discussing it. It feels like such a relief that this is happening.
Randomly, loads of people are coming up to me asking about sports at the moment. I feel like it must be something to do with my choice of taking GCSE PE otherwise its something else and I don't know what it could be. Luckily I have training tonight as I feel that a long needed for catch up is needed (a day and a half is too long to keep things quiet to people who are basically your second family). This means that I have to talk to Sam though, openly, at the pool. In front of the others for the first time. Also, more directly, a real conversation with him that's not been influenced by my previous sporting skills. Hmmm, maybe that's why all the questions are occurring... I can work off that.
So, training was eventful. We had another relay night as the team competitions are just around the corner and team building is vital. This is even more important with our sudden, new, dreamy latecomer. However, it gave us (and everyone else) a good excuse to talk. After consolidating with the rest of the girls it was decided I would be the main source and scoop the most information out of Sam I could. Amazingly, however, that gorgeous specimen had decided he wasn't as interested in me since our chat earlier and I hardly received that chance to speak to him. It felt odd and weird but I'm sure there was a reason or he just wanted to bond with the others. Then he did something I'd never heard him say: he has a girlfriend at his new school. Automatically all the girls are rushing to me with descriptions so I can work out who it is, but I am clueless, he's being so vague it could be any girl and I haven't seen him with one yet, only boys.
School the next day I figured I would slip him a note about this mystery girl. I knew I was off the list but I was still intrigued and wanted to be able to let all of the others in on it tomorrow so we had more to discuss and delay getting changed after practice. It's always too cold once you get out the pool so hanging in the showers and chatting or sitting in towels is the perfect way to get over that problem. This was everyone's chance to get to know what girl he was into. However, this then led to further suspicions from the rest of the school and more and more people asking him, wanting to know too. He and his mystery girl were the talk of the school. Not even the year.
I got a paper plane back, honestly, boys.
'Someone you know well but don't stick to like glue'
How am I meant to work that out? I know the school expect me to be smart but I am merely an averagely achieving girl who sucks at riddles. Besides, I only have Claire at school so who do I know well. I can rule out anyone not in my classes. But that still leaves about forty girls. So what next? How do I solve this? I pass the riddle (as I will now call it) back to Claire who is as confused as I am. It doesn't make sense. I try texting him:
'That doesn't make sense, who? I need more information...'
'You shy away from her in the corridor but she likes you really. You are on separate leagues but if she knew the other you I'd say you were similar'
Great so no help again. And rumours are starting to go around that it's me after the trampolining exposure and our instant closeness the other day.
'Rosie! ROSIE!'
'Oh, sorry Miss'
'Your lunch is now in reception please go and collect it now'
I hate it when mum does this, why can't I just go and buy my own? Reluctantly I get up and collect my note. On the way down to reception I hear a familiar voice. One that does not belong at this school talking to my head teacher.
'Of course, our state of the art swimming pool and gym are available for you to use at any time you need to Mr Wilson' Wilson. I know someone by the name Wilson. Dave. My coach. What is he doing here?
'Oh, Rosie, well done at training last night. You smashed those times. You and Sam would make a brilliant team to work off each other' He saw me and caught me. Along with half of my years' science lessons by the looks of things. Brilliant. I've been exposed by my own coach!
