I remember waking up the next morning to the smell of pancakes. 'Maybe daddy's here and mommy's all better now.. so she's making us pancakes!' I quickly hopped off my bed and ran downstairs. I tip-toe'd into the kitchen, hopeful of seeing my dad along with mom this time. But when I saw who stood in front of me.. my smile faded. "Good morning sunshine!" Molly said from across the room as the spotted me. Molly was the babysitter that looked after me when mom and dad were too busy at work. Her name was Malissa, but I liked calling her Molly. "Hi Molly.. Where's mommy?" I responded as I walked towards her and glared at the stacked pancakes on the plate. "Well.. mommy has some work to do so she asked me to come and take care of you! What do you want on your pancakes Carol?" I thought to myself and remembered that, it was the weekend. Mom never had work on weekends. I explained to Molly, and she said it was something important, I figured it was then. "What about daddy? Where is he?" Molly looked down at me with apologetic eyes. "He's.. with your mommy.."
All I remember that day was me continuously asking about my parents. I knew I was young, but I knew something was wrong too. When it was time for bed, I couldn't fall asleep. I needed one of them by my side, I wanted to know where they were and what took them so long. I checked on Molly, and she was flipping through the channels on the television. Now was my chance. I grabbed the house phone and quietly made my way back to my room. I dialled my mothers' number, and waited. One beep.. Two beeps.. Three beeps.. Four beeps.. "Hello?" She finally answered! 'Mommy! Where are you? I miss you!' "Carolina? aren't you asleep?" 'I can't.. I want to hug you and daddy. When are you coming back?' "Darling.. by the time I come back it will be very late.. I promise I'll give you a good night's kiss alright?" She said. I had no opportunity of saying anything in response. We said good-bye, and hung up. I waited for hours, but no one showed up. Except Molly, who was checking on me, but of course I pretended to be asleep. I could tell that a fair two hours have passed, and only minutes later, my eyes shut down, and mom and dad were still nowhere to be seen.
That night, I had a strange dream.. I couldn't figure whether it was a nightmare, or not. I remember sitting with my father on the swings, in the park that was nearly two blocks away from our house. We went there every Saturday after getting ice cream; it was our favourite place. However, in the dream, dad stood in-front of me. Not usual, he'd always be pushing the swing for me. "Dad, help me.. I can't do this without you?" I begged as he stood there motionless. "I can't, cupcake.. You'll have to learn to do it yourself. I'm not here anymore." Those words seemed insane to me. He was right there, why wasn't he helping me or coming any closer? "Please daddy?" I asked one last time. "I love you sweetheart." He said as he pecked a kiss on my cheek and forehead. "And you can do it without me.. I'll be watching you in-case. Goodbye darling." And before I could even reply.. He walked away. I couldn't see him anymore, as if he was a ghost that has just vanished into thin air. I tried to follow him, but I stood there hopeless, clueless, and worried, as everything seemed to be still, except for the tears that had escaped my eyes.
