When Scout was two years old, her mother passed away suddenly of a heart attack. Mrs. Finch was a shadow on Scout's memory, a mysterious figure who waited around every corner, but disappeared when the light tried to shine on her. Scout regarded her mother with detached curiosity; she knew Jem and Atticus had loved Mrs. Finch, but she didn't seem real to Scout. Scout's family was Atticus, Jem, and Calpurnia—no one else.

But Mrs. Finch remembered Scout well, and often talked with me about her family. She was always watching over them from heaven—her Dear Jem and her Dear Scout and her Dear Atticus. She often said that Jem would grow up to be like Dear Atticus. Atticus, she said, was the smartest, most handsome man she had ever known.

Agatha Louise Graham—better known as Mrs. Finch—was born in Montgomery, Alabama on an unusually cold January day. Many years later, Agatha laid eyes on Atticus Finch. Her story begins something like this:
