I know my Mom had noticed my unusually quiet demeanor, considering she had made everything that I loved to eat. But I'm glad she decided not to question it. Maybe she was trying to avoid the topic more for her sake than mine. To think she's still doing all this after what I did to her, the suffering I've put her through, I don't know if I should be grateful or scared.
As I was getting up to keep my plate, I heard the doorbell ring.
"Can you see who it is, dear?" My Mom said without looking over, still washing the dishes.
I walked over towards to the door, trying to contemplate who it could possibly be. It's not like I was popular enough for people to line up outside my house to meet me as soon as I was home.
As soon I opened the door, I was greeted with a slap across the face.
"Bitch, have you ever heard of a cellphone? It's used by people to communicate. To their best friends. To tell them they're finally home. So that they can let go of the breath they used to hold every time they saw you lying on that bed in that scare house."
My only reply to the statement was wrapping my hands around Leslie tightly. Leslie, my best friend, more like a sister who I've known since forever, is the one person who's stayed with me through thick and thin.
"Sorry, Lee." I said sheepishly. I stepped aside to make way.
Funny how just seeing some people lifts your mood instantly.
"Hello Adriana. Thanks for informing me." Leslie said. If I called my Mom by her first name, she'd slap me across the face. But she insists Lee to call her Adriana. Aren't Moms supposed to hate your friends?
"Hello, dear. How have you been?" My Mom said, briefly turning around to give her a smile.
"Good now that summers have started and Ellie is back." She said, chuckling.
"This reminds me, I've got to give these exams before senior year starts so that I don't have to lose a year going through junior year. Think you could help me?" I asked, although I didn't have much hope.
"Girl, I'd love to. But you know books and me don't have great chemistry. You have no idea how I went through Junior year without having you to copy homework from." Typical Lee.
"So much help you are."
"I know." She smirked.
"C'mon. Let's go up to my room." I said, moving towards the stairs. Lee patiently walked behind me, helping me as I slowly walked up the stairs. I opened the door to my room and we both sat on the bed.
"How do you feel now?" She asked tenderly.
"Better." I said, moving over to rest my back.
Leslie still didn't know what happened that night. She knew what she heard from the papers, and the little that I talked about. But she didn't question me further. She knew it was a touchy subject for me and that I'd tell her when I was ready. She had patience, and that was one of the things I loved about her.
"How was school all the while I was gone?" I asked.
"Sucked, mostly. Junior prom happened. Did I tell you?"
"You did. Thrice to be exact. With the oh so charming Bryan Parker." I laughed.
"You did? I thought you didn't listen because of all those painkillers and stuff they gave you." She said, furrowing her eyebrows.
"The medicines didn't make me deaf, Lee." I said, laughing.
"Oh by the way, Williams asked about you." My eyes darted right up on that sentence.
"Archer Williams?" I said, sitting a little straighter.
"Who else?" She smirked. Archer Williams was my hopeless crush since second grade. Many guys came and went, but unfortunately, I could never get over him. We weren't exactly great friends, so it was shocking that he would ask about me.
"What did he say?"
"Was asking how you were and when you're coming back from there. I said soon." It wasn't much but it still made me giddy.
Stop acting like a little girl. I thought you'd get more brains after all this.
The voice is right. It doesn't even matter, really. I fell quiet. Thankfully, she didn't seem to notice it.
"It's so dark in here." She said, getting up and moving towards the window.
"I like it that way." I said, as she drew open the windows.
But the curtains were drawn again less than a minute later.
Lee turned around slowly, her blue eyes wide and her mouth hanging open. She stood like that for a while before she slowly walked nearer and almost shouted,
"You live next to Chase Adams?"
