Chapter 1 | Strange Newbie

"Hi. I'm Matt." The tall blonde spoke abruptly, his eyes giving a quick scan as he spoke. "I'm a radar technician." He finished. No one spoke in return. They only gazed at the random individual until silence took over, then resuming their momentarily paused activities. It was only two people who still stared secretly until "Matt" left to go get a tray of food.

"Wow. Random, huh?" Hayden, your best friend, spoke in a small tone. Her eyes switched between you and him, noticing his awkwardness immediately. You, however, didn't care too much. Today had been a long day, working within the same job: the ship's technician. It was a tiring job, exhaustion taking over as you used your fork to kick random pieces of food around.

"Maybe one day they'll actually make good food." You said in hopes of changing the subject. Listening to your best friend's usual routine of non-stop gossip of new people just wasn't on the agenda today. It was common for new people to come, replacements needed for quite a few reasons very often.

Matt, meanwhile, was waiting on the lunch line for food. His face remained expressionless. That is, until he got his hands on a tray. His bottom lip stuck out slightly to form a disgusted pout. He let out a sigh under his breath before turning to find a seat. This should be fun.

He chose his seat next to a few other employees. It was an attempt to ease drop and blend in as one of their own. It was necessary, for his job. Or experiment, for better words. Picking up his fork, he began to play with his food. Matt leaned in, examining the food closely, as if he were expecting to find something other than food on that tray. He received a few looks, causing him to look back, as well. That is, until he caught something from the corner of his eye.

Another worker, obviously. Sitting across from another female. She appeared bored, as if forced to be there. Although, there was something about her. The blonde technician couldn't help but stare, examining her facial features. 'How was I not aware that she worked here?' He didn't know who "she" was, but he was interested in getting to know her. Although he couldn't help but feel awkward; inexperienced to this random emotion so suddenly erupting from within.

You looked up after a minute or so, glancing over at Hayden. From over her shoulder, you could see the new guy there. Just staring. You simply stared back, however not for too long. Hayden noticed this, looking over her shoulder. She quickly put the pieces together. "Ooooh." She mumbled, turning to give you a side glance. You didn't notice her small comment. You were too busy looking back at the blonde, observing. Your eyes would look away, only to return swiftly. 'He's kinda cute.' You thought to yourself, although aside from that he looked completely dorky, and weird.

The few minutes, which had felt like an hour, became somewhat weird. He didn't move, nor even blink. He almost seemed zoned out. His attention suddenly altered when a worker sitting nearby attempted to strike a conversation. At this time, you had just noticed the look from your best friend. She wiggled her eyebrows, leaning in towards you.

"Well! You can't tell me that wasn't anything." She spoke, giving a soft smirk. "N-No. I was just zoned out, is all." You lied, and Hayden knew it. She gave you a look, and you immediately gulped. She quickly rose, walking around the table in order to assist you up from your seat.

"Come on," She said, guiding you to your feet. "Let's go meet the new guy!"
