As freely floating through an almost empty space, my eyes shot open with the sound of a knock. In front of me, there appeared to be a simple door. With out thinking, I answered.
Any free feeling that I had before had vanished and transformed into complete fear. I had somehow gotten on the other side of the door, and before me stood a mighty man. He was huge; he sat on a throne the size of a skyscraper. He was dressed in gold, and wore an impressive beard.
"It is I, The Ultimate," he bellowed in his deep, intimidating voice. "You humans may refer to me as 'God.'"
Uncontrollably shaken with fear, I mumbled out a soft "hello."
"I know why you're here. You and exactly 674 people have done this same thing since the day has started. You have failed to see the wonders of life I have created."
Every ounce of fear I had before turned into anger.
"'Wonders'? You call my life a 'wonder'?" My face would have turned red if I were amongst the living. "My life was a living hell!"
The Ultimate only had a sadness in his eyes, and mumbled, "You haven't seen hell yet, my dear. "
"However," he continued, stroking his beard, " your life could've been everything I planned for it to be, which would have been great if you had chosen the right path." The sadness in his eyes lingered. "And you would have, if you hadn't ended it so soon."
I stiffened, finally realizing that I could've gone wrong.
"With your death ending this way, you are granted one death wish," The Ultimate informed me. "You can control anything down on earth, see anything, maybe thump the back of the head of your enemy. But you may not come back to life, or have anyone else come back to life."
I was astonished. Doesn't he know the way I died? How could I possibly care what goes on down there? However, when I go to where whatever I have in store for me in the afterlife, I don't want to regret refusing a death with I once was offered.
I knew eventually my curiosity would be the end of my conscience. I proclaimed my wish.
"I want to see how everyone reacts," I said fearfully. "About my death, that is."
