I tried my hardest not to make eye contact, but I couldn’t help but stare at the face of the person who ruined my life years ago. He looked directly at me as the door closed lightly behind him.

I got up from my seat and I went back to the guest bedroom, locking the door behind me. I laid down on the bed next to Alex, trying not to feel as uncomfortable as I did, but there was no way of getting rid of that feeling.

I had fallen asleep next to Alex, and I woke up to the sound of shouting. My first thought, was that the family got into another fight like they always did. I got up and walked out there, trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

As soon as the door opened, everything went silent. It took me a moment for my eyes to adjust to the light, but I was confused when I saw Grant on his cell phone. He was sitting in the large rocking chair, with Eddie hanging over the back like a little stalker. Him and Eddie were marveling over who they were talking to.

I walked out and sat down on the couch next to my mother. “What the hell is going on out here?” I leaned over and whispered to her.

She gleamed as she whispered back, “your uncle Grant and Eddie are talking to Eddie’s favorite WWE Wrestler!”

I rolled my eyes. “Who’s that?”

She watched as Eddie and Grant continued talking to their idol, making small talk about the show tonight and whatnot. “John Cena!”

My eyes widened. Grant looked over at me with a weird smile on his face. “I’m gonna put this on speaker,” he stated as he stared directly at me. I looked at the phone that he set down on the small coffee table next to the rocking chair. The phone looked incredibly familiar, and then I realized that it was MY FUCKING PHONE! I must’ve left it out there when I went back to my bedroom.

“IS THAT MY PHONE?!” I couldn’t help but scream as I got up from the couch. I stepped over to the small coffee table and grabbed my phone from them before Grant could stop me. I took my phone into the kitchen as I took it off speaker. “John?”

“Gem? It’s nice to finally hear a familiar voice.” He chuckled, and I rolled my eyes.

“I’m so sorry about that. I left my phone in the living room and they got to it. I didn’t mean to let them.”

He chuckled again. “It’s fine Gem. Really. I mean, it’s nice I guess, being able to talk to your family.”

I scoffed. “They are not my family.”

“Yes they are.” I turned to see my father sitting at the kitchen table. I completely forgot that he lives in this room most of the time. I turned and walked out the screen door into the backyard. It was dark outside.

“Gem are you okay? You don’t sound too good.”

I sighed. “Where do I even start?”

“Well,” John said sarcastically, “you should probably start at the beginning, that would make the most sense.”

I giggled. “Your sarcasm never ceases to amaze me.”

“I try. But seriously, what’s bothering you?”

I took a seat in a patio chair and sighed again. “I don’t know. Everything that happened with Alex earlier has been worrying me all night, and just being here at my parent’s house just pisses me off. I shouldn’t have come back.”

“Come on Gem, it can’t be that bad. You want me to come over there with ya?”

I shook my head. “No John, if you come over here, Eddie’s gonna sit on you so Grant can tie you up and leave you in our basement. They’re not going to let you leave.”
