Two weeks after
November***
I don't want to be here. Who wants to be at a funeral for their best friend? No one. That's who.
"Liam fought a long and difficult battle with lung cancer," says some old guy from the front of the room. "He was a brave and strong young man." He clears his throat and I hear a baby crying in the back of the church. "Here on Earth, he suffered a great deal and was in pain for many years, worsening as he grew older. He got more time than was expected and for that we must be grateful, but now his suffering is over. All his pain is gone." He clears his throat again. "He will be missed." The old guy steps down and returns to his seat as someone else takes his place.
"This is bullshit," I mumble.
"It is, isn't it?" Liam's older brother Red says from beside me. "He said nothing about Liam that didn't have something to do with cancer."
I nod my head. "His cancer didn't define him. He was Liam. He wasn't just a boy with lung cancer." I smile. "He was so many things." I feel tears slide down my face and quickly brush them away. "Sorry, I just, I miss him Red." I lean forward in my seat, putting me head in my hands. "I miss him so damn much."
I hear a choked sob and realize that Red is crying too. "He deserved more time than he got." Red says, "Fuck he couldn't have lived two more day until his 17th birthday?" He leans backwards and swears. "It's not fair!"
People start glancing at us now but I ignore them. I ignore everything and I fall forwards into my hands and backwards in time. I fall back farther and farther and farther into my memories and I remember.
