"Good morning!" Hazel smiled as she saw Layla open the door. "Happy first day of school!"
Layla rubbed the sleep from her eyes and looked at Hazel with an annoyed look. It was around six twenty in the morning, and school didn't start for another hour or so. However, Layla knew this was normal for Hazel to be almost knocking down her door this early on the first day of school. She'd been doing it since the first day of school back in fourth grade. After the first day, Layla was the one going to Hazel's house to wake her up in the morning.
"Oh right. The first day." Layla muttered softly, still continuing to rub her eyes of sleep. She moved aside to let Hazel in, and Hazel stepped in gracefully yet energetic. "I'll call Kaye to come over, she's probably letting the dogs out anyway."
Hazel sighed, flopping onto the couch and setting her bag down next to her. Layla grabbed her home phone and sat down on the couch next to her. As Layla sat down, her hand brushed against Hazel's arm and she shivered.
Layla's hands were cold.
Hazel never understood why her hands were always so cold. She probably explained it to her one time, but Hazel didn't recall it in her memory at all. The two always had the running joke that Layla was a vampire though, since she was always cold. She was pale and didn't go outside much which just added on the it. It wasn't true, and Layla confirmed it. The supernatural wasn't real to either of them anyway.
Layla had the phone to her ear, waiting for Kaye to pick up the phone. Kaye was always an early riser, and was often somewhere first before anyone usually no matter how far she lived. She lived closer to Layla than Hazel, but she lived farther from the high school. There was also a lot of space in her yard for her dogs to run around in.
"Hello?" Kaye's voice echoed through the phone and Hazel turned her attention to Layla, who was now talking to a very loud Kaye. "Layla?"
"Hi, Kaye." Layla said and stood up, not paying attention to Hazel's eyes following her. Hazel frowned as she walked away and she reached forward, taking the television remote off the coffee table in front of her. She flicked the TV on, and it's volume came out loudly which made Hazel scramble to turn down the volume. Layla turned to her and waved her hand around, silently telling her to lower it down. Once Hazel finally got the volume down, Layla sighed and brought her attention back to Kaye, who was still on the other line.
"Sorry, Layla." Hazel mumbled, biting her lip and sinking down lower into the couch.
"Yeah, Kaye." Layla said, ignoring Hazel. "Someone just turned on the TV... No, Jeremy didn't wake up... Surprising, yeah I know..."
Layla's voice faded away from Hazel's as she began to walk into the kitchen that was down the hall. Hazel sighed, flipping through channels as she tried to find something interesting on. She heard movement upstairs and she immediately thought she'd woken up Layla's older brother, Jeremy, but then there was no more movement and Hazel sighed in relief. Jeremy was pretty scary when he's woken up in the morning and not needed.
