Chapter One: The Party

As I sat in Drew's truck waiting for him to come outside from the store, I got a odd feeling. I've only felt this once before in my life and that was when Mama died. At first I was worried about my best friend ,but he came jogging back with some beer and his trademark grin plastered on his face.

"That wasn't so bad, now was it?" He asked with his southern drawl.

"Whatever, Drew." I sassed back smiling. He chuckled and flung the beer into his tailgate with ease. Drew, like any other boy in Riverstone, is a football player. He got in the truck and tried to start the engine to fail ,but after a second time it shakily started.

"You gotta fix that soon." I told him as I held my hand out the window.

"I know and someday I will." He replied like always.

As we began going up the mountain back home, I looked up at the darkening sky. The feeling rushed back to me and settled in my stomach. I'm your typical Riverstone girl tan, thin, and crazy. I've always been sassy and know how to get information out of people around here. I guess I get that from my Dad who is the town sheriff. He could be so much more, but he won't leave here. All us kids can't wait to leave and never look back. The store we came from sells alcohol to teenagers, the owner gets away with it because he is a big shot around here. I played with my Black hair nervously thinking about that feeling.

"What's wrong, Caroline?" Drew asked me.

"I'm fine, Drew." I lied. He probably knew I was telling a lie ,but he dropped the subject.

"Jake is gonna be there." He informed me.

"I should've known, you little fibber!" I said crossing my arms.

"Hush now, he ain't gonna bother you." He said.

"That's what you and Cole always say!" I countered.

"I ain't gonna talk about , Cole right now." He said. His eyes darkened a little bit when he said his old best friend's name. Cole's dating the most poplar girl in school, Lana Wilson. She has him wrapped around her finger. He does what she tells him to do and she told him to stop hanging out with us. He doesn't even look our way. Lana is my enemy, I hate her so much.

"Alright." I muttered finally. I don't need to think about "perfect" little Lana. Jake and I have this thing. We never let the other date someone else, we flirt, we fight, and we hate each other. We must be so complicated, I've been avoiding him for months and he is gonna be at the party tonight. As we rode up the mountain the sky turned a grim darker Gray. A cold shiver went down my spine, as my brain yelled at me. "Something bad is gonna happen, Caroline! You know this feeling. This feeling means death." That won't happen, it can't happen. Everything will be okay, I'm just freaking out.

"Caroline, are you sure your okay?" Drew asked, his big mossy Green eyes filled with worry.

"I said I was fine, didn't I?" I asked.

"Yeah you said you was. That don't mean a damn thing." He pointed out. I gave him a look pleading him to drop it.

"You know, you don't have to go." He muttered.

"Well, I want too. Don't worry about me." I told him.

"Your my best friend, it's my job." He grinned. I rolled my eyes playfully and looked back up at the eerie sky. It's just a dang sky, I told myself.

We finally made it to the woods that teenagers in Riverstone claimed for themselves. The woods used to be a poplar swimming hole called Glory Creek. Glory Creek's not a creek though it's a dang river. Nobody swims here anymore, it's dangerous. "Let's go." Drew said and we got out of the truck.
