Breathe in, breathe out.
Those were the only thoughts that Anthony could process.
He walked into his friend's room, seeing him lying down in a hospital bed.
Gene grinned as Anthony sat down on his bed. "What's up?"
Anthony pursed his lips. "I'm here to see how you're doing. Does it still hurt?"
"Yeah, I've only got a huge gash running across my stomach."
Anthony stared at the ground. "Sorry."
Gene rolled his eyes. "Don't be. It wasn't your fault."
"But it was."
"Look, Anthony, there was no way you would have known that I was behind you, if anything it's my fault for scaring you like that in the middle of a fight."
Gene could hear the guilt in Anthony's voice. "You didn't scare me, I just turned around and my staff was tearing through your skin, and a fighter like me shouldn't have made such a--"
Gene suddenly shifted in his bed and winced. "Anthony. I'm going to slap you if you don't stop beating yourself up about this. I know that we're not exactly the best of friends and that our relationship will always complicated no matter what. I know you better than you know yourself and this isn't your fault, okay?"
Gene looked up at Anthony. He had tears in his eyes and that pout on his face that had always made Gene hate him a little bit because he was so cute when he did it.
Anthony nodded and wiped his eyes. Gene smiled and patted Anthony's arm.
"Now go away. I need to sleep."
