Why Are Introverts Misunderstood In Modern American Society
I can’t stress enough how much this article couldn’t have explained the misunderstanding of introverts any better. (The article is in the external link if you wanna read it.)
Introverts are frequently maligned and misunderstood in this extroverted society. Introverts are usually seen as “the other". Only recently have introverts are considered a legitimate personality type. Introverts offer unique skills and perspectives to society. Introverts are to be respected and cherished, not derided.
Teachers even considered introverted children to be socially retarded, needing psychological counseling and therapy. Parents, too, are not so reasonable regarding their introverted children. Many times parents are ashamed of their introverted children, wishing that they were more extroverted “like normal children are." …their parents told them to be more like “normal children" which oftentimes irrevocably damages their self-worth.
I wanted to bold this for emphasis because it starts when we’re young and we grow up believing that we have to “fix" or “cure" our natural personality that we were born with. There is definitely something wrong about that. Here’s an advice from the article:
Advice to introverts: Never estimate yourself or your talents. You have more emotional and psychological resources and knowledge than you know. When people get more involved with introverts, they are usually surprised at what introverts can usually do! It is not the extroverts who necessarily knows the most! Introverts have talents that most people cannot fathom!
