Dane sat in a daze, almost slipping into stupor several times. The drugs he had to take weren't only ineffective but were also giving him nasty side effects. Bringing himself back to the there and now was a struggle. The noises inside his head drowned out Sherri's voice.
Frank's advice wasn't working. Letting the voices in made them seem louder and intolerable. He hadn't heard from that strange man since he last saw him two weeks prior.
Dane was hearing a swarm of bees, and amid the nuisance came a distinctive voice that slowly gained intensity.
"Come to me!" The voice was thunderous.
Dane massaged his temples. "Stop..." He whimpered and squinted. His head throbbed once more.
"You don't belong to this world. You belong to my world." The strange voice roared. But only he could hear it.
"Get out of my head." Curled in his chair, head almost touching its arm, the boy grimaced as he pressed his fingers hard against his temples.
"Don't fear me, Dane. We're supposed to be--"
"Leave me alone."
"But I can't. Not when I've touched a mind as precious as yours."
"Go away." But the swarming voices engulfed him.
"Dane, what's the problem?" Sherri's voice tapered off.
And then the sinister voice spoke again with a roar that deafened the distraught telepath. "Do not resist me, child!"
"Stop." All he wanted now was to silence the voices. "Stop... STOP!"
Dane let out gasps of air. He steadied his gaze on the arm of his chair. His heart thumped. The voices receded. At last, silence. The boy let out a sigh of relief. But as he looked up and around, the eerie scene greeted him.
