"Shit," I mutter to myself. The one day I absolutely have to catch the bus, I miss it, let alone the fact that it's my seventeenth birthday. My parents took the car this morning, and our other one's in the shop. "Great. Absolutely positively great." I begin walking the three and a half kilometers to the school, pulling out my new Galaxy phone and texting my best friend Hayley.

Hey, missed the bus, walking. tell them i had a doctor's appointment or something? xI put in earbuds, put on the Beatles, and sigh. I feel my phone vibrate a second later.
From: Hayley
Yeah, no problem! And happy birthday, again! :)She had already texted me late last night wishing me a happy birthday. I scrawl a quick thanks down on the phone, and look up as someone knocks into me, resulting in my falling over.
"Oh my god Finn, you knocked this poor girl over!" I hear a guy's voice yell, and faintly hear a hand hitting whoever was apparently Finn.
"I know, I'm trying to help her! Are you okay?" The conversation becomes directed at me. I open my eyes and see two twins standing over me, one in red horizontal stripes and looking at me, and one in a blue sweatshirt with his hand outstretched toward me.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I reply, rubbing my head. I take his hand, and stand up.
"Aren't you in my Spanish class? Aaliyah Michaelson?" the one who had just helped me up (and also knocked me down) asks. I then recognise him as Finn Harries, who sits two seats away from me in my period two Spanish class.
"Yeah, actually. Finn Harries?" I half-smile. He grins brightly.
"Yup! This is my twin brother Jack." He gestures to his twin and Jack smiles.
"Awesome! So what are you doing here?" I ask, laughing.
"Well, we missed the bus, and to be honest didn't think it was worth going, so we kind of sort of didn't." He shrugs, chuckling.
"You too? Were they just early today or what?"
"I don't know, but it's annoying. You're not gonna make it, you know. My house is just down the block, and we've tried walking before, and there is absolutely no way you could make it in time from here."
"I know, but I just don't think it's a good idea to ditch school, you know? Especially since it's my birthday, the last thing I want is to be yelled at." I laugh.
"Aaliyah, it's your birthday. Do you really think your mum will be mad?" Finn asks, smiling cheekily.
"Either way, the teachers will yell at you for being late," Jack adds. I shrug. I mean, I guess he's right. What's the point?
"It sounds like you're trying to convince me to go with you guys!" I smile. They seem like genuinely good guys, I mean, spending the day with them would be pretty awesome. I mean, it is my birthday, and if there's any day off I deserve, that's when it is. Finn and Jack look at each other and nod in agreement.
"He's boring," Jack says, "And he's an arse," Finn adds. Jack punches him in the shoulder and then continues, "and you seem pretty cool," Jack shrugs again, "and just plain pretty," Finn raises his eyebrows flirtatiously. I roll my eyes.
"So do you want me to come with you or not?" I ask the twins, chuckling.
"Yes!" Jack and Finn reply in unison. And so began my seventeenth birthday.
