We pulled into the hospital's parking lot and we ran over a speed bump, causing Aunt Cheryl to wake. She looked at her phone and had seen that she had a missed call. It was from a unknown number and she didn't bother to call them back. We parked the car, and I saw something that made me a little light headed. There was a funeral convoy out side of the hospital, and there wasn't any family around, which was kind of odd. Anyway, we went inside, but mom had forgotten which floor dad was on. So she asked the secretary what floor John Smith was on.
"We don't have any one here with that name Ms." replied the secretary.
"There must be a mistake, John Smith is here. I know it, so please tell me what floor he's on." asked mom.The secretary's head went white as a ghost, meaning something was wrong.
"Ms?" asked the secretary.
"Yes?" replied mom.
And that's when I figured it out. The funeral service, the missed call. Dad was dead.
The secretary looked at me, and she must have known that I had figured it out.
"Mom?" I said.
"Oh my gosh please tell me what floor he's on!" said mom.
"Ma'am you said that you requested John Smith?" asked the secretary.
"Yes!" mom said loudly.
"Ma'am, I hate to say it, but we have only had one patient named John Smith here."
"What do you mean had?" replied mom.
"Ma'am, John Smith passed away this morning at 9:53."
That's when all three of us collapsed.
