You are 12 years old and live in Bronx, New York. You have 4 brothers and 2 sisters and your mother and father are still married, but separated. Your mom passed and you have to live with your dad in New Orleans. You move in and you have to go to a new school, find new friends and everything. You've only been in New Orleans for a week and you're still unpacking and getting situated with the help of your father who is well into his 50's.

Your dad (Y/D): You okay, you having fun here?

Y/N: *you lie* Yeah, it's great.

Y/D: I'm glad, the last thing I want is for you to be unhappy here. *walks into his room*

And with that, you finished putting the small details into your new room.

As you're laying down watching junk TV, you look to your left out of the window and see a lady and a man yelling at each other outside directly across the street from your house. Eventually it stopped and they went back in. You shrugged and went back to your TV show.

--

It's now Sunday and your dad provides you with the news that he has registered you into a new school walking distance from your house.

Y/D: Now you know that New Orleans is a very dangerous place. So I don't want you going to school by yourself.

Y/N: But dad, I'm in the seventh grade. Me and my friends always used to walk to and from school together.

Y/D: I know, sweetheart. But this ain't New York. People don't care about you here. It's hard to trust anyone around here. I have a few close friends; people I trust. For example, Sheila and her boys.

Y/N: Who is Sheila?

Y/D: The pretty brown skin lady who lives across the street. Haven't you seen her?

Y/N: *you lie*...I don't recall...

Y/D: Well she is one of those people who I can trust, okay? Which is why from tomorrow forward, until I feel like you are used to your surroundings, you'll be walking with two of her sons to school.

Y/N: *sighs* Fine, dad.

Y/D: I'm sorry, baby, but it's only for your safety. They walk the same way you'll be walking, and they've lived here since they were born. They know their way around. If you hang with them long enough you will too.

Y/N: Okay, I'm not mad.

Y/D: Good. Now it's getting late. Pick out your clothes for school tomorrow and go to sleep.

Y/N: Okay goodnight.

Y/D: Goodnight, honey.
