DiCaprio took best actor at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, while The Revenant beat out a highly-competitive field of Oscar Leonardo DiCaprio has won his first ever Bafta for best actor as The Revenant dominated the annual ceremony by winning three of the biggest awards.

The night truly belonged to the likeable duo who sailed off with Bafta wins in their respective categories. Leo won leading actor for The Revenant and Kate picked up best supporting actress for Steve Jobs.

His Titanic and Revolutionary Road co-star Kate Winslet also picked up a BAFTA for her role in Steve Jobs, and whenever these two get together at awards ceremonies you can pretty much guarantee all the feels.

The star was overjoyed when he heard the news at Sunday night's star-studded event, held at the historic Royal Opera House in Covent Garden for the 10th year running.

The 41-year-old, who has never won a BAFTA before, has won critical acclaim playing Hugh Glass in The Revenant, a movie about a frontiersman who goes on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s.

Taking to the stage, he said: 'I'm absolutely humbled and I'm absolutely honoured by this award tonight. I have to say as an actor I have been inspired by so many British actors throughout the years.

'I remember watching Tom Courtenay in Loneliest of the Long Distance Runner when I was 15-years-old with my father all the way to Gary Oldman in State of Grace which influenced an entire generation of actors.

'And of the course the late great Peter O'Toole and anything Daniel Day Lewis has ever done.

'I want to thank one particular British actor, my partner in this process, Tom Hardy. I want to thank you for your fierce loyalty not only as a collaborator but as a friend I could not have done this journey without you and my make-up artists who spend hours every day turning me into a living zombie.

'Alejandro, thank-you for becoming a great friend throughout this entire process.

'And lastly there's one person I have to thank, I would not be standing up here if it wasn't for this person.

'I didn't grow up in a life of privilege, I grew up in a very rough neighbourhood in east Los Angeles. This woman drove me three hours a day to a different school to show me a different opportunity.

'It's her birthday today, mom happy birthday. I love you very much'
