Chapter 2- Shopping, Spills and Best Friends
Ren's P.O.V.
What. The. Actual. Hell.
I can't wear this.
I twirled around in front of the tall mirror, looking at the dress my mother had picked for me. Words couldn't descirbe this ugly, thick, itchy material. I groaned and picked a piece of lint of of the sleeve, watching as it fell to the ground.
I shouldn't have complained, I should've just worn an old blouse and a skirt. I had plenty of those and I'm sure nobody would care if they were ripped and saggy. Why did I have to go and tell my mum I didn't have anything to wear?
Maybe then she wouldn't have given me.... this. I looked at the tacky, dress she had let me borrow, up and down in the mirror. It was horrible. The neckline came up just below my chin and the sleeves came to just above my wrists. Let alone the colour that made me gag. It was a horrible camo green that resmbled a sort of vomit shade.
Where did she even get this? Forever 61? I wouldn't have been surprised. It was definitely not something I would wear anyday. It was so plain and boring and gross, but I didn't have the heart to tell my mum that to her face.
I walked over to my bed, and almost tripped in the process. The dark material pooled around my feet and I lifted it up all the way to my thighs. I was glad for the cool air that hit my legs and I hadn't even realized how hard I'd been sweating in this thing. It was so thick and long.
I looked at the clock. 11:13. I had enough time to get to the mall and back before the start of the dinner, and finish all of my chores. I knew I did, I just didn't know if my mother would let me. I unzipped the dress from the back and heaved a reluctant sigh as it fell down to my ankles.
I cautiously stepped out of the dress and walked to my closet. I still felt insanely hot even though it was the middle of winter and I was standing in the middle of my room in my bra and underwear. I pulled out once again my t-shirt and jeans, and slipped them on, glad to have something other than that horrible thing on.
After hanging and putting away the dress, I lazily walked downstairs. My brother sat at the couch, along with my father and I knew they were going to get yelled at for ignoring their chores, but right now the football game that was playing on the T.V. semmed a lot more important.
"Mum?" I called hesitantly, as I walked into the kitchen. She had busied herself at the sink, scrubbing a mass of dishes. She turned around and looked horrified at my appearance.
I winced, preparing for her to yell at me but I was surprised when she instead starting to cry.
"Oh Renesmé," She managed between sobs, and I stood there awkwardly. Not exactly knowing what to do. "I just-I just tried so hard, but no one seems to care!" She cried. "I really wanted tonight to be so special, I-"
"Mum, I'll go change... I just really wanted to go shopping for something a little more my... style." I said, embarassed. She simply sniffed, and gave me a weak smile. "Go ahead hun, I trust your judgement."
She kissed my forehead and I spun around, hurrying to grab my coat and cellphone before I opened the front door.
"I'll be back in an hour or two!" I shouted, knowing no one cared anyway and slammed the door.
The cold, winter air nipped at my cheeks and I pulled my jacket tighter across my chest, as I climbed into the car. I pulled my cellphone from my pocket and punched in Alicia's number.
She answered on the first ring and her groggy tone gave me the hint that she had still been asleep. I smiled and said "You up to go for a little shopping, sleepy head?"
