Chapter 14...Introducing The Conn Family
Dawson
Danielle looks absolutely stunning in her white ball gown. She's glowing—not just because of the pregnancy, but because she's happy. I can see it in her smile, in the way her laugh echoes through the small courthouse. We decided to go to the courthouse for our wedding, and while it's a simple affair, Danielle had insisted on wearing the dress my mother bought her. I thought the dress might be over-the-top for something so small, but now? Watching her twirl Brently in circles, the train of her dress sweeping around them? I couldn't imagine her in anything else.
Brently takes her role as the flower girl very seriously. She marches down the aisle, leaving a thick carpet of petals behind her. Abby snorts next to me. "If there was ever a contest for overachieving flower girls, Brently would win," she whispers.
"Absolutely," I whisper back, but my eyes don't leave Danielle. She's making her way toward me, and for a moment, it feels like everything else—the room, the people, the noise—fades away. It's just her. My Danielle.
We exchange our vows in front of a small audience—Abby, Gage, and Brently—and when the judge pronounces us husband and wife, I kiss her like the world might end tomorrow. She tastes like champagne and hope, and I know I'll remember this moment for the rest of my life.
The next morning, I wake before Danielle. My eyes drift to the wedding band on my left hand, and a smile spreads across my face. I never thought I'd wear one of these. After Victoria, I'd been sure that marriage wasn't in the cards for me. But Danielle changed that. She turned my life upside down in the best way possible.
She stirs next to me, snuggling closer before her eyes flutter open. "Good morning," she says sleepily, her voice still thick with sleep.
"Good morning, Mrs. Conn," I reply, letting the title roll off my tongue. It feels right—she feels right.
She smiles at the sound of her new name and stretches, the blanket slipping off her shoulder. "We really had a wild night last night, didn't we?" she teases, glancing around the room. Clothes are scattered everywhere. Her big, poofy gown is draped over the chair in the corner, and my tuxedo is in a crumpled heap on the floor.
"Yeah," I say, grinning at her. "But we had fun, didn't we?"
"Oh, yes, we did," she purrs, leaning closer to me. Her newfound confidence is intoxicating. "What do you say we have some more fun?"
"But what about work?" I tease, even though I already called in sick. There was no way I was going to work the day after marrying this woman.
"Well we could always call in sick," she smiles mischievously.
"What if I already have?" I ask her.
"Then I say, you deserve a treat," she winks, and then it's pure bliss. Her passionate side once again takes over, and I let it.
After a very long shower together, we head to my parents' house to pick up Hudson. Today's the day we officially begin the adoption process, and I can't stop the butterflies in my stomach. In less than 48 hours, I've become a husband, and now I'm about to become a father. If someone had bet on this being my life six months ago, they'd be swimming in a pile of cash right now, because I certainly didn't see this coming.
"You know Hudson kind of looks like you," Danielle says as we pull into the driveway, her voice soft but playful.
"And what are you trying to say?" I laugh, raising an eyebrow at her.
