Chapter 4

Getting home wasn't an easy task for Macy because she wasn't familiar with the place she was stranded in. Her only possible way out was to call a taxi. She didn't want anyone to worry about her.

The night had gotten cooler but the breeze felt good on her hot skin as she fumbled with her house keys. It seemed like her sweaty hands wouldn't stop from shaking and that caused her to drop them with a loud clank. She cursed under her breath and bent down to pick them up. The door was then finally unlocked and the warmth of her house soon enveloped her whole being. It didn't surprise her that the house was deserted because it was only 10:00 and her mother wouldn't be back for another half hour.

Macy placed her keys back into her bag and made sure the front door had both locks on. She walked into the kitchen and checked for any missed calls that could have been made while she was gone. She listened to a few from sales sponsors, one from Aunt Clara who rarely called, and the last one surprised her. She played it over, actually listening to it this time.

"Madison? It's Austin from the conference yesterday? I wanted to tell you that my offer still stands and that Saturday evening sounds great. Give me a call back okay? Bye!”

It seemed like Marcy’s mom had been planning out a date. It’s been a while since she had agreed on making plans with someone else; she was always busy with work and meetings. Being a head doctor at Red Cross Hospital had its ups and downs but at least money wasn’t an issue for them. Still Macy had been planning on getting a job soon, she felt horrible for making her mother work this much but her offer was always refused.

Macy headed up the stairs towards her bedroom, turned on the light, and placed her cardigan, bag, and phone on her bed. She headed straight for her bathroom for a warm shower. After changing into her sleeping wear, she headed back downstairs for a snack. She sat down on the island with walnut cookies and a glass of milk in mind to devour. After taking a bite of the cookie, her eyes looked up and the vase of red tulips.

The memory quickly embellished her mind and made her body shudder. After finishing the last of the food in her mouth she got up and took a hold of the vase. In a few steps, Macy reached her trash can and dumped the tulips in the bag. She placed the empty vase on the countertop and headed into bed.

Waking up was a blur for Macy but she was glad that she ran in the morning because the freshness hitting her face seemed to wake her up. Now wide awake, she entered her house to find her mother in the kitchen drinking her usual coffee. Macy headed towards the refrigerator for a cool bottle of water. Half of the water was gone in an instant as she chugged it down.

“Most teenagers your age are still sleeping right now.” Macy’s mom said, leaning on the edge of their marble island.

“I’m not most teenager’s mom.” She replied placing down the bottle of water.

“I know sweetheart.”

“Aunt Clara called last night and some guy named Austin left a voicemail.” Macy studied her mother’s face as her yes grew large and the sound of his name.

“I wonder what Aunt Clara would need.”

“Mom.” Macy warned, “Who is Austin?”

“A friend.”

“A friend who confirmed date on Saturday?”

“He said that? Anyway, he’s only a friend.”
